But, the coins in circulation have to have a higher face value than scrap value, so it makes more sense to declare the old coins to have the new value.
It's happened in other countries.

Remember at the outbreak of covid the banks were crying about being short of coins?
Every dollar of coins in your jar is money that the banks paid face value for, it's a dollar out of their pockets.
They weren't short of coins, they just wanted all that value back in circulation instead of working against them.
They would back the coins going forward at the new value as they hold most of them.

If you want to gamble, the dollar coins are about 6 cents in scrap, but deliver a bigger punch on revaluation.
IF you have savings in the bank, it may be worth the small percentage of interest to have a couple thousand dollars in your closet.
No bank holiday can cancel your account.
They can't turn off your number if you have cash.

1000usd in dollar coins weighs ~18 pounds, few people could run with 3 of them.
The nickels weigh 22 pounds, no danger of too many of those getting smash and grabbed.
I even got a box of sacagewea dollars that are retailing online for 3usd, or more.
