Today, on July 1, Panama receives a new government. Back on May 5, elections were held and a new president was chosen. Each town also chose a new mayor and representative. Everything in the government literally changes in one day.

Each new mayor and the president will bring in their own workers. Each government position will switch to someone new on this day, unless the new person coming in decides to keep that person in their job. The new people coming into these positions learned about their new employment within the last 30 days.

The new president is Jose Mulino. He was the vice president when Martinelli was president before the most recent president (Cortizo). Mulino was over security for the country and many are expecting great things from him.

The new government in Panama always reminds us of reasons we moved here seven years ago. I wrote this post and this post six years ago about why we moved to Panama if you're interested in the in depth reasons.

Some of the main reasons we moved here were the traditional values that are upheld by the Panamanian government and the Panamanian people. Last month, I saw a few pride posts come through on Instagram on some Panamanian news channels, and it was interesting to read the comments. Gay marriage and abortion are not legal here in Panama.

It is said that Panama is about 50 years behind the US in many ways which is sometimes good and sometimes frustrating! Mostly it relates to the "agenda" not being pushed here as much as it is there. Panamanians watch US TV shows, so you can see it sneaking in at different places, but Panama still holds to traditional values, and we expect the current government and president to continue supporting these values.

The Panamanian culture is very family oriented. Sunday is a family day as many people work Monday to Saturday and spend Sunday with their families out doing activities or eating together. The culture of the US has changed to entertainment over the years. This is very obvious to see in how movies, TV shows, video games, and more are so popular. It's difficult to meet up with other people due to them being so entertained or "busy" with their own schedules.

We love that we see our Panamanian "family" each week and multiple times in a week. It's very common here for people to just show up at our house or our kids to have friends over. We love the community we are in here.
