Zohran Mamdani’s Justice: A Dangerous Gamble for New York’s Women

New York City is witnessing an incredible increase of sexual violence with more than 1,600 rapes and 4,300 sexual offenses in just the first part of this year. In light of this alarming situation, socialist mayoral frontrunner Zohran Mamdani wishes to implement reforms that some would suggest prioritize the releasing of predatory criminals, rather than the rights and safety of victims. If Mamdani is elected, many sexual offenders, some charged with abuse in the second and third degrees, would no longer face incarceration after punishment at Rikers Island.
Mamdani prefers instead of incarceration to talk instead of "restorative justice", which favors an exchange between victim and perpetrator instead of punishment. What happens if "hurtful people" leave and act out again? Past examples of restorative justice, which have produced some precarious and dangerous outcomes, are often endorsed by activists he seems to admire.
Mamdani further advocates for police to be replaced by social workers to respond to domestic violence calls. Experts warn this will also worsen the potential to protect victims. And his repeated refusal to unequivocally denounce extremists with documented histories of sexual violence and assault, like Hamas, cast further doubt on Mamdani's true protective intentions and approach.
When a city is faced with a crisis of sexual assault, the policies Mamdani proposes allude to a grand strategy that is inconsiderate of victims, and, instead promote leniency toward career aggressors. For the women of New York, the actions of Mamdani are sending a dangerously wrong message.
So who is Zohran Mamdani really protecting?
