Quis Custodiet Ipsos Custodes?
Who watches the watchmen? According to the Department of 'Justice' the answer to that is nobody. Yesterday, they announced that they were rescinding the consent decrees with Louisville and a host of other cities where the police had been found to engage in a systematic pattern and practice of abuse and rights violations.
The mask is slipping y'all. Coupled with that circus in the White House with South Africa's president, it seems they're not even bothering to hide whose interests they're looking out for and who they're not.
The DoJ's ostensible reasoning for rescinding the consent decrees was that independent oversight would be too burdensome. Seems kind of rich that the only profession required to wear cameras due to their long record of misdeeds is excused from oversight because of the burden it would be to protect people's rights. Freedumb at its finest!
By all appearances, the mayor and LMPD have been slow walking the consent decree in hopes of just such an outcome. The city made no effort to contest the DoJ's actions yesterday, but the mayor was quick to reassure us that the city would implement its own version of the consent decree. Only problem is we've already seen this song and dance routine. Breonna Taylor died at the hands of a 'model' police department.
All these photos are from 2020, when LMPD was busy violating folks' constitutional rights. One of the chants that rang out time and again was 'No justice, no peace!' And there still ain't no justice in this damn town. . .
