Unraveling Minnesota’s Massive Fraud Scandal: Billions Stolen, Empty Daycares, and a System in Shambles

Many of you are well aware that my home state of Minnesota has been in the National news quite a bit as of late. With the holidays wrapping up and the new year on the horizon, I thought we'd dive into something that's been bubbling up from the Midwest specifically, the jaw-dropping fraud schemes being exposed in Minnesota. If you're like me, you've probably caught wind of this through viral videos or headlines, but let's break it down properly. This isn't just some small-time scam; we're talking billions of taxpayer dollars vanishing into thin air through fake charities, ghost daycares, and bogus healthcare setups. It's a story of greed, oversight failures, and a whole lot of questions about how this scheme went unchecked for so long.
Let me start with the basics. Back in 2022, federal prosecutors kicked off what's become one of the largest public assistance fraud investigations in U.S. history, centered around the "Feeding Our Future" program. This was supposed to be a noble effort to feed kids during the pandemic, but instead, it turned into a feeding frenzy for fraudsters. Dozens of people, many from Minnesota's Somali community, were charged with siphoning off hundreds of millions by claiming to serve meals that never happened. Fast forward to now, and the scope has exploded. Just this month, the U.S. Attorney's office revealed that fraud in Minnesota's Medicaid services alone could top $9 billion – that's right, billion with a B. Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Thompson even quipped that the system was so easy to game, it attracted "tourists" looking to cash in.
What's really got people fired up lately are the citizen-journalist style exposés. The power of independent media is revealing its worth now and is stepping up to do the work mainstream media should be doing. Nick Shirley, a young investigative journalist has been pounding the pavement in Minneapolis and his video above went viral yesterday.
In a single day, he and his team uncovered over $110 million in suspected fraud tied to daycares and healthcare providers. They visited addresses listed as bustling child care centers, only to find locked doors, empty buildings, and neighbors swearing they've never seen a kid in sight. One spot got $5 million over two years for "caring" for over 100 vulnerable children but when Shirley showed up, the door was slammed in his face, and no one could confirm any actual operations. Another claimed to handle 74 kids but refused entry, with locals saying it's been a ghost town forever. It's heartbreaking and infuriating – this money was meant for real needs, like feeding hungry families or supporting kids with autism, but it ended up lining pockets instead.
And it's not just daycares. There are schemes involving autism services, where folks like Abdinajib Hassan Yussuf were charged with wire fraud for fake claims. Non-medical transportation and interpreter services are riddled with issues too, where the fraud might even outweigh legitimate work. Prosecutors have filed charges against dozens more this December, bringing the total defendants in related cases to over 78 for the Feeding Our Future mess alone, with convictions piling up – 56 to 62 so far, mostly guilty pleas and trials wrapping up in 2024-2025. Most of these busts happened under the Biden administration, starting with big indictments in 2022.
Politically, this is an absolute powder keg. Governor Tim Walz is catching heat, with House Republicans launching an oversight investigation into how this ballooned on his watch. Rep. Tom Emmer's been pressing for answers on specific cases, like a daycare with a misspelled name that raked in $4 million without a single child in evidence. Some voices, like those on X, are pointing fingers at the Somali immigrant community, which has grown significantly in Minnesota and is often at the center of these allegations. Community leaders push back, saying they're vital to the economy and that fraudsters don't represent them all. But the New York Times called it "industrial-scale fraud," highlighting how brazen it was—fake invoices, shell companies, the works.
Obviously, I'm no expert, but as someone who's paid exorbitant State taxes in Minnesota since I moved here in 1995, this makes my blood boil. How did state agencies miss this? Minnesota isn't alone – similar scams have hit other states, but the scale here is staggering. And with multiple agencies now involved, from the DOJ to congressional committees, it feels like the lid's finally off. Some are even linking it to broader issues, like potential voter fraud in the Twin Cities, though that's more speculative.
What does this mean for the rest of us?
It's a wake-up call about government waste and the need for real accountability. If a 23 year old YouTuber with a camera can expose $110 million in one day, imagine what a proper audit could uncover nationwide. Kudos to folks like Shirley for shining a light – we need more of this kind of citizen journalism since the mainstream media doesn't seem interested in reporting exactly how bad this problem is.
As for Minnesota, the perpetrators and the city and state officials who’ve allowed this fraud to continue unchecked should be brought to justice, and systems better tighten up to insure this doesn’t happen again. No matter what side of the aisle your political beliefs land on it's time to admit we have a massive and systemic problem in all levels of our government. The American people deserve better.
What do you think? Is this just the tip of the iceberg?
Drop your thoughts in the comments below. Stay informed, stay vigilant, and let's hope 2026 brings with it some real and lasting reforms.
All for now. Thanks so much for reading.
It is annoying to watch taxpayer money being wasted while actual needs are ignored. The tales of fake daycares and phony services are shocking.
Yes, indeed.
It's some place Eric! I remember watching quite a long video you shared about corruption there and why so many people were moving away.
Absolutely. It's disheartening to watch this fraud as so many middle class families are struggling for just their basic necessities.
I suppose I'm not extremely surprised. With all of the other shocking things that have been previously revealed that our tax money has been spent on, or more like given away too, I'm sure this will not be near the end of the list.
As big as it is, there is no way anyone could ever make me believe that no official person has known about it.....NO.WAY.
The elected officials have to know and probably devised the plan in the first place. There are increasingly more people calling for the resignation of our governor (Walz). State employees are reporting they informed his office of this fraud years ago and not only was nothing done but the whistleblowers were retaliated against.
Crazy stuff!
He not only should resign, he should be prosecuted.... in my opinion.
I agree. Walz and many others elected officials should be behind bars if any of this can be proven and there's a fair trial. My fear is both parties are likely implicated in this and will probably protect one another from prosecution.
I thought New York was the most corrupt state. Not exactly an honor to be in the running for the title of 'most' :(
I believe it's nationwide, unfortunately. Minnesota is just getting the spotlight right now.
They are in on it. We blame, perhaps rightly to some extent, the Somali population, but many others had to have profited as well, if only in that they weren't doing the tasks they were being paid for. I am certain this happens everywhere. Truly, thank goodness for independent journalists.
The agencies and politicians absolutely are benefiting. On the surface they benefit from the votes and are very likely pocketing a portion of the tax dollars as well. I read a very interesting article last night about Somali history that made this all make a bit more sense—in Somalian tribal culture people are raised to believe fraud, bribery, and such are fine as long as it benefits their individual tribes. They also tend to vote as a whole block after they immigrate and remain self-contained/closed communities so, as a group, they're perfect targets for political corruption. This in no way excuses their role in this but that missing piece to the puzzle makes it all make more sense. Yes, TG for independent journalism!
This is a very difficult subject. I have heard they also practice female genital mutilation. On over 90% of their women. In Minnesota. Can we say the Somalis are, as a rule, bad people? So much evil has been done based on that notion, that this or that group is bad and has to go. In any event, we can blame the US government employees, of all stripes, who benefit from any of this, and denounce them as bad people.
There are vast cultural differences, that's to be sure. I firmly believe that immigrant groups should have to assimilate into the countries they become citizens of. As far as I know every single wave of immigrant into the US prior to the 1980's were ready and willing to do this. My ancestors from Europe did. This isn't the case anymore. I don't believe people need to give up every aspect of their culture but it makes no sense to me that they want to flee their dangerous and failing countries for a better life only to attempt to recreate the same country they came from wherever they land. The problem is government could change this but they won't. This same scenario is playing out all over the world.
With this Somali population, and their alleged crimes (as defined by the US) against even their own women, we see how our own political platforms can backfire. As a result of all the diversity training, identity politics, and related BS, it is verbotten in some circles to have this conversation we are having right now. We must, instead, assume that the charges against the Somalis are mere discrimination (which makes us the bad guys), and look the other way. Interesting times!
We have to agree to move beyond any sense of the "verbotten" when it means all American taxpayers, of all colors and creeds, are being taken advantage of. I see more and more willingness to openly discuss this and believe people are finally fed up enough to realize the fear of being labeled has effectively paralyzed any kind of real reform.
The height during my lifetime of verbotten conversation happened just a few years ago, during covid, when anyone who even slightly questioned the BS was not allowed to speak at all about the inconsistencies of the messaging and/or the harmfulness of the dictates. I still find folks mostly ignore me when I try to point out just how crazy their actions were at that time. I don't see more willingness to discuss, but I hope a bit of my perspective has become clearer.
Some of us are, yes. But anyone still beholden to a political party is only fed up with the opposition's party and its nonsense. I believe that what we must do is to recognize that politics is nothing more than entertainment for the masses, population control. They very effectively have us split 50-50, world wide, if we are to believe the stats that US government approved propaganda sites (MSM) provide.
It's sad how corrupt things are. We have so many programs that are either federally funded or state funded that I get them all mixed up where the money comes from. Bottom line you don't really want to screw around with either of them!
It's insane how deep this fraud goes and, I believe, it's going on in almost every State and at a Federal level. Getting Americans to just agree that the fraud is theft and is bad is an uphill battle. Plenty of people still play the blame game and turn this issue into a partisan problem and/or are afraid of sounding racist or islamophobic if they voice their disgust over the issue. This is how it's continued this long. I'm afraid the Somalis will be the only ones punished and the elected officials will get off, scott free.
Ah yeah, that is always a concern isn't it. Everyone is so quick to throw blame out.
That's how reform is paralyzed.
It sounds like what happens here in SA with government officials benefiting from gross fraud. I honestly would not have thought it can take place in America, absolutely maddening to hear that one's taxes have gone towards such fraudulent schemes!
Unfortunately, it appears America takes fraud to entirely new heights. Some estimate trillions of taxpayer dollars have been wasted. This might explain a large part of the multi-trillion dollar deficit. All the while our infrastructure is crumbling, people can barely afford groceries, and the middle class is shrinking. It's crazy but I'm glad it's all finally coming to light. This is the step that has to happen before reform can happen. Are you feeling better?
It's just awful, let's hope that things start changing now that it's all being exposed.
Feeling better, having less coughing fits, xrays show an issue that hopefully clears up
I do believe I'm on the road to recovery, thank you Eric.
Exposing this to the light of the day is a huge step forward but I'm not 100% certain any lasting reform will happen, I hope so! I'm glad you're on the mend! I was worried when I didn't see you write for so long.

I watched a few documentaries on Somali community over there and it is like a different country there. Complete with Somali flags in their shopping mall, they also did not consider themselves black or African American, which pissed off African American community. And they voted for Trump in last election thinking they are going to benefit financially from his election. Things didn't work out that way and now they are switching their allegiance...
From what we've experienced here in Minnesota Somalis aren't interested in assimilating into Western culture but rather work to recreate Somali in whatever country they immigrate to. They live in somewhat closed communities and vote as one coordinated block, historically. Here in Minnesota they've always aligned with the Democratic party but likely have no political allegiance and will switch to whomever promises more money and benefits.
People commit fraud in such a way that we do not know what is going to happen to us and when all the things are done and our hard earned money, our property and all such things are taken from us and then we feel a lot of worry and sorrow but the way these news are going on now, we hope that these things will end now. In the coming time, now the time has changed and the digital time is coming.
