I don't have much experience with these things but I learned very quickly on a trip in Bangkok that the drivers are not to be trusted. I ended up at an "art store" between my destinations without permission at all. The driver became aggressive towards us when we refused to go into the store.
It was fun up to that point though but yes, I don't think this sort of transport is needed anymore.

ah yes, that is a very common con. I would say don't ride in them ever again but if you do make sure to say "no stops!" before you leave. A lot of the time the driver will refuse to take you at this point and this is mutually beneficial since he is a con artist that never intended to be a taxi anyway.
