Is still good that we can complain!

Democracy, a powerful word that means the power for the people. While living in a democracy, we start to criticize and see that it probably doesn't work as we expected. We see politicians abusing from power and many other concerns which I read in many posts during the Hive Learners contest this week. People are tired of not being represented by the politicians in power, and they become frustrated with democracy. But should we do that? Isn't it worse going to another system?

Hand putting voting bulletin into box.jpg

Let's give the example of Canada, the Liberal party is in power for 9 years. So it is quite normal to find people unsatisfied with that. Even some people with left tendencies are tired of this party, but then it comes into another problem, these people don't want to see the conservative party in power, so they continue voting even though they don't liking so much about the liberal party. So those who support the conservative party get mad because they don't see the liberal party out of power. Is democracy really failing? Or, probably, people don't know how to deal with the power in their hands. Like bad curation in Hive, how many times have we seen posts with high votes that don't deserve?

Ok so let's change from democracy to a dictatorship in Canada, now I can't say what I want to change in the country. I can express my opinion about how the country needs to do in the next years. I can't vote, and I need to follow whatever rules are imposed by the government, is it better? In my opinion, it isn't. I will feel oppressed, really oppressed. I can even be arrested for exposing some type of idea. That still happens in many countries around the globe, like North Korea and other countries.

People complain a lot about democracy and forget that the other side is worse. Probably the worst is during false comparisons with exaggerated situations where you don't agree. You can't say that we live under a dictatorship if a politician takes a more authoritarian decision. Let's give an example of the recent abolition of carbon tax here in Canada, the people elected them and even if you didn't vote for the politicians that made this decision, they represent the majority that voted. And we have elections happening every period of time. And here in Alberta, for example, the recent decision of the premier to ban books in libraries in schools that she considers inappropriate for kids. If you agree with that you feel happy, if you are against this type of thinking, you will be against and feel that it isn't fair.

Despite everything that we get mad or happy about politicians' decisions, we still have the power to change. Maybe we don't change it because we don't know how to use this power. In every country that I am aware of, which is democratic, I feel the same feeling among the citizens. I saw people from Nigeria, Brazil and other countries posting about that. How are they not satisfied with their democracy? But remember, if you weren't in a democracy, you would even be very uncomfortable about posting about it, fearing for your life, so let's celebrate that we still can't talk how bad we feel about our government.

Vou me sentir oprimido, realmente oprimido.

That's true democracy is not perfect, but at least it allows us a voice. I also feel that the solution lies in more active civic engagement. And I don't find complaining as negative at all, but it’s the actual sign of freedom. You have made really excellent points, it is very well-written.

In UK they are litterally arresting 30 people a day for posting memes!

https://nypost.com/2025/08/19/world-news/uk-free-speech-struggle-30-arrests-a-day-censorship/

Or even for expressing opinions... They are oppressing who exposes the UK flag, lol, this isn't democracy... Honestly the best form would be oligarchy, with the highest IQ people leading the country and not these dumbass politicians we have

These are known as sparks of authority. In Brazil there are so many more, and also you can observe anywhere. But still we can vote in different politicians when the time comes or even make pressure for impechment etc
