Let the Chaos Begin
We've been here before, slightly different scenarios, similar challenges for the average citizen. Most challenging issue: food!
After a quiet uneventful night, we woke up to empty streets, closed businesses (not just because it was a Sunday), scarcity of some products, and considerably higher prices.
The price jumps is not a new thing (it's been like this for a whole year, and being honest, it's been like this since 2008). Last January, an average person could buy $20 with an average salary of 1,160 Bs. By december 2025, that same worker (whose salary did not increase) could only buy $4. That's how bad things get every year and it has been like this for 26 years.
An elder's pension is just 130 Bs. No wonder this spectacle has multiplied by as many dirty corners we have in every town.
The current recent political events, messy as they can be, are nothing compared to the festering sore caused by the very people some self-righteous defenders of international law and human rights insist should be left alone sorting things out.
We resume the old habit of surviving, fighting off external and internal foes.
Long lines
Fearful business owners who refuse to open lest their business be looted by mobs. Ironically, the longest this happens, the higher the chances of hungry/angry mobs wanting to loot.
Even the pets were waiting in lines. Luckily for them, it was easier to get their good (for those who can afford it).
My wife and I entered a nearby supermarket and while she looked for some basic products, I stood in one of the six long lines.
They were not limiting the number of ítems people we buy yet, but I am sure they will if things don't improve soon.
It is ok with us, either way. With our budget, we can't afford shopping for more than a week's worth of food.
That is the reality of most professionals, but some people can still buy in bulk.
They ran out of eggs just when we arrived (about 9 am), so I had to go out and walk a few blocks to find a place where they were selling eggs while my wife waited in line.
It was shorter than the supermarket line, so I figured I'd be done in time to back and help my wife out.
There were enough eggs for all the people in line at the moment, and despite the increase in price, they were cheaper than in other places I had heard about (2,000 Bs for 15 eggs).
I was back just in time to pay.

And we were out after some 4 hours. 😰
I don't see the day Venezuela can be stable again. We are sick of surviving mode. We are sick of playing pretend to save face because "life goes on and you can't be blue all the time."
2026 for us may go down in history as the year when the right thing was (partially) done by the wrong people with the wrong purposes.
Only time will tell.

It is in United States national interest to have a friendly and prosperous Venezuela. Will it happen? I don't know, but it sounds like it has gotten so bad that even a small improvement will be welcomed.

One thing many people refuse to understand is that no matter how virtuous someone wants to be (peace, respect for international law, sovereignty, human rights, etc.), there are situations that can be solved only by means that may feel contrary to those principles or values. The hard reality is that you cannot expect to win a game when the opponent does not play by the rules.
Some people insist that a dictator must be deposed by their people, not by foreigners. However, when those trying to change things around have no weapons and the dictator is ruthless and has every man and woman in uniform at his disposal, things get a little complicated.
Venezuelans (civilians) have tried by any democratic means available for two decades and the only results have been: thousands in prisons, hundreds of thousands dead, and millions in exile.
Venezuela can be prosperous soon as long as there is a drastic political change. Those who caused all the problems (for us and for other countries) cannot be left in charge of solving them. They have not done it in 25+ years. On the contrary, they have multiplied those problems (domestically and internationaly).
The media reported here that Maduro claimed to have armed the civilian populace because of the threat of war. Clearly that isn't true. Thanks again for enabling me to grasp the reality of the circumstances there.
Well, about that: the average population has no weapons. However, since Chavez times (2000-2013), militia groups called colectivos were created. They do have weapons and licence to do whatever they want in plain daylight. They operate side by side regular military forces and in some cases with authority over police forces. They are civilians and their main job is to be available to indimidate civilians any time they are required. They are patrolling the city now. I have not been able to report it myself because my family is very scared to go out and take pictures. They are the main reason every protest since 2002 has failed. Unarmed civilians, even by hundreds of thousands can't compete with an armed minority, impunity and the silence of the international community

I have to drive for ~30 minutes to get to a grocery here. It makes everything more expensive, because I have to add the price of gas to my groceries. Living in the beautiful village I do is worth it to me. However, today I went grocery shopping and when I got home I realized I had not purchased butter. Gaaaaah! I'm not driving an hour just for butter. So now I cannot make banana bread and will not have delicious nutritious breakfast.
Still, that's better than shortages caused by living under sanctions, and being ruled by crooks that only make your plight worse. I have only me to blame for my forgetfulness, and that means I have no complaints. I have great sympathy for your circumstances, and I know I am not alone. Many of my fellow American well understand that decimating the economies of countries ruled by authoritarian regimes only worsens the plight of the people, and causes the grips of the rulers to tighten on every source of economic power so they can maintain their lavish lifestyles.
BTW, didn't that price for eggs read 1300B, not 2000B? I only pay $5 for 12 huevos from a local farmer, and they're very good eggs, jumbo size and deeply colored from eating grasshoppers in the fields. I didn't understand your pics comparing B to $ so I don't know what you have to pay, but it's sure more than the pensioners can afford!
Please keep reporting from the ground in Caracas so I can remain abreast of factual circumstances there. The media here are mere mouthpieces for power, and I do not believe a word they spout. I saw a claim that Venezuelans were gleefully assembling in the streets and celebrating the attack and kidnapping of your President. While I am sure most Venezuelans have no fewer complaints about their government than I do mine, I cannot imagine celebrating such troubles while you have to spend 4 hours in line to get a bag of groceries. That's the kind of news we get here. If that's what's really happening there, I'm sure you'd mention it. Since you don't, I am sure I'm just being gaslit as usual by the media.

About the celebrations: true. Silent celebrations inside the country. If you do it publicly you go to prison. People are very scared to the point of staying home, leaving without cellphones or deleting every chat just in case. Abroad (especially Chile, Argentina, and Spain) big public displays. They can do it because they do not have to fear inmediate repercusions.
About the prices of things. The eggs I found were worth 1300 Bs. They same amount of eggs were being sold for 2000 in other places.
The Bs-$ exchange rate is 305 bs per dollar now (legal market established by the central bank). However, hard to find as dollars are, black markets rule and prices have gone as high as 560 bs per dollar.
The picture shows the exchange price in January 2025 vs December 2025 (from 57 bs per dollar to 294). That's how much our currency is devaluated every year.
I very much appreciate you providing clarity I lacked. Sometimes I am a bit slow and depend on the kindness and patience of good people to take the time to help me understand.
