New York Bill Proposes Using Blockchain to Secure Election Results
New York has proposed several legislative measures to explore the use of blockchain technology for improving election security and government operations.
Assemblyman Clyde Vanel introduced four bills aimed at promoting blockchain applications in state governance.
One bill directs the New York State Board of Elections to study the use of blockchain technology to protect voter records and election results. The study will assess blockchain's potential to prevent voter fraud, enhance cybersecurity, maintain accurate voter records, and efficiently share election results.
A report is expected within one year of the study's initiation.
Another bill proposes the establishment of a task force to evaluate blockchain's feasibility for storing government records and sharing information securely and efficiently. This task force would hold public hearings and submit a final report on its findings.
A separate bill seeks to amend state technology laws to legally define blockchain-related terms like "smart contracts" and recognize digital signatures stored on blockchain as valid electronic signatures.
The fourth bill calls for a digital currency task force to analyze the effects of cryptocurrencies on New York's financial markets.
These measures reflect growing interest in blockchain as a tool for enhancing transparency, security, and efficiency in public administration.
