The Latin American Report # 593

Florence Immigrant & Refugee Rights Project, an Arizona-based legal aid group, has added twelve Honduran children to a recently filed lawsuit originally aimed at blocking the deportation of nearly 80 Guatemalan children during the Labor Day weekend. The organization claimed to have information about an imminent move by the government “to illegally remove Honduran children in government custody as soon as this weekend, in direct violation of their right to seek protection in the United States and despite ongoing litigation that blocked similar attempted extra-legal removals for children from Guatemala.” These children arrived in the United States unaccompanied and have been living in shelters or with foster families, according to this AP report. A judge granted the Guatemalan children to remain in the country for about 14 more days to enforce their rights. The federal authorities, who defend the legality of the immigration action, have a total of 457 Guatemalan children targeted for deportation. Central American minors constitute the largest group by geographic origin living in government-run shelters.

Thus, the Trump administration continues its tough anti-immigration offensive, which seeks to increase deportations and makes no distinctions between countries, as demonstrated by the big raid at a Georgia-based electric vehicle manufacturing plant owned by the Hyundai giant. Undoubtedly, Trump’s policy discouraged the migratory flow northward, which has had dire consequences for thousands of migrants from Latin America in particular, who staked everything to pursue the so-called American Dream and maybe did not believe that the old mogul would fully carry out his campaign promises.

This EFE report describes the situation faced by hundreds of migrants stranded in Mexico’s dangerous southern region, without documents and exposed to very serious health threats. Among the most common conditions are hypertension, diabetes, asthma, respiratory, gastrointestinal, dermatological, and stomach diseases, as well as stress, depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder, according to the Spanish news agency. An official from the Health Secretariat stated that more than 39,000 migrants have been treated at the agency’s modules in Tapachula, Chiapas state, where they receive free medical care. Most are from Cuba, Guatemala, and Haiti.

Cuba/US

In what would be a harsher blow than all the economic sanctions combined, the U.S. government appears to be blocking Cuba’s participation in the upcoming World Baseball Classic. Frequently, not necessarily only during Republican administrations, Washington denies visas for Cuban athletes to travel to certain events. However, major competitions such as the World Baseball Classic, a sport in which Cuba has an honorable history, have so far been respected in this regard. The sanctions against Cuba, active since the Eisenhower administration and more forcefully instituted under Kennedy, mean that the government must give its approval even for issues such as the participation of Cuban players in this Major League Baseball-run event.

Cuban authorities denounced that although MLB sent the request for approval of Cuba’s participation on time, the American organization has still not received a response. The rest of the teams have already received the formal invitation to process their players’ visas—a second hurdle for Cuba, only if the ongoing problem is solved. The first Trump administration derailed a historic agreement that established formal relations between the Cuban Baseball Federation and MLB, which would have changed the unusual dynamic whereby Cuban players cannot take part in the Big Show without severing all ties with their homeland. Perhaps everything will be resolved at the last minute, we'll see.
