Megalopolis (2024) - REVIEW - [ENGLISH-SPANISH]
I will not deny that I had high expectations before seeing Megalopolis, some movies I see without knowing anything about them but about this one I heard and read several things on the internet and I thought it was going to be better, first the director is Francis Coppola, yes the same of The Godfather and I also read that he spent many years developing Megalopolis and that he even invested his money in this project, I guess it is not just another movie and it is something like a dream but I thought it did not have the result I expected it was all chaos. The movie mixes several themes like science fiction, politics, romance but it seems more like a Shakespeare play. Of course I respect the audacity of this director because he made the movie he wanted to make without proving anything to anyone or being accountable, it is as if he had said if I am investing my money I will do whatever I want.
No voy a negar que si tenía bastantes expectativas antes de ver Megalopolis, algunas películas las veo sin saber nada de ellas pero sobre esta escuché y leí varias cosas en internet y pensé que iba a ser mejor, primero el director es Francis Coppola, si el mismo de The Godfather y además leí que pasó muchos años desarrollando Megalopolis y que hasta invirtió su dinero en este proyecto, supongo que no es una película más y es algo como un sueño pero me pareció que no tuvo el resultado que esperaba fue todo un caos. La película mezcla varios temas como ciencia ficción, política, romance pero parece más como una obra de teatro de Shakespeare. Claro que respeto la audacia de este director porque hizo la película que quiso hacer sin demostrarle nada a nadie ni rendir cuentas, es como si hubiese dicho si estoy invirtiendo mi dinero haré lo que me da la gana.
The story of Megalopolis centers around a man named Caesar who is an architect and has created a golden substance that can do anything from creating a building to healing wounds. It seems that this guy also has magical powers because he can stop time although it is something that is not well explained in the movie, he has a dream and that is to use this substance which is called Megalon to create the ideal city Megalopolis and replace the decadent and corrupt New Rome. But of course the mayor gets in the way because he wants to build a casino to generate tax revenue, people always taking everything to their convenience, politicians are like that sometimes and one does not understand them they take away schools and build something that generates money that is not bad to generate money in a country but I wish they could understand that if you encourage education those people will work for you and take the country forward. Although I know this has nothing to do with Megalopolis because Cesar wants to build a city but I made the analogy because of the mayor. To spice things up Cesar falls in love with the mayor's daughter who can also stop time just like him.
La historia de Megalopolis se centra en un hombre llamado Cesar que es arquitecto y ha creado una sustancia dorada que puede hacer cualquier cosa desde crear un edificio hasta curar heridas. Parece que este tipo también tiene poderes mágicos porque puede detener el tiempo aunque es algo que no se explica bien en la película, el tiene un sueño y es usar esta sustancia que se llama Megalon para crear la ciudad ideal Megalopolis y sustituir a la decadente y corrupta Nueva Roma. Pero por supuesto el alcalde se interpone porque quiere construir un casino para generar ingresos fiscales, la gente siempre llevando todo a su conveniencia, los políticos son así a veces y uno no los entiende quitan escuelas y construyen algo que genere dinero que no está mal generar dinero en un país pero ojalá pudieran entender que si fomentas la educación esas personas van a trabajar para ti y sacaran el país adelante. Aunque sé que esto no tiene que ver con Megalopolis porque Cesar quiere construir una ciudad pero hice la analogía por el alcalde. Para ponerle más picante a la cosa Cesar se enamora de la hija del alcalde que además puede detener el tiempo igual que él.

Although everything is chaos with riots, assassination attempts and speeches by Caesar about his vision of the future. Not only the plot is complicated and absurd but also the performances and although some actors have talent their character did not give them for more as is the case of Giancarlo Esposito who I have always liked because this serious and neutral but here the script does not give him much work beyond being an obstacle to the vision of Cesar in the role of the mayor, it seemed to me that they did not take good advantage of his talent. Adam Driver plays the role of Cesar and although you can see that he tried his best neither his talent could make sense of this character who at one moment is reciting Hamlet for no reason and at another giving a speech about the future of humanity, this does not make him look like a real person. Nathalie Emmanuel in the role of Julia the mayor's daughter only exists as Cesar's love interest and muse and they have so little chemistry that it seems forced. But it can get even worse, Aubrey Plaza as Wow Platinum is an absurd character, Jon Voight as Crassus seems to be in a completely different movie and overacts to the point of parody and Shia LaBeouf as Clodio I think is the most baffling of all, he seems to channel every stereotypical evil character you can imagine.
No creas que esta es toda la trama porque como dije al inicio esta película mezcla drama, política, con romance y también ciencia ficción, para hacer todo esto más complicado el primo de Cesar y otra mujer allí están conspirando en su contra y su tío no se salva mucho también hay un rollo allí, un satélite se estrella en Nueva Roma y destruye una parte de la ciudad y aquí Cesar aprovecha y cumple su sueño. Aunque todo es un caos con disturbios, intentos de asesinato y discursos de Cesar sobre su visión del futuro. No solo la trama es complicada y absurda también las actuaciones y aunque algunos actores tengan talento su personaje no les dio para más como es el caso de Giancarlo Esposito que a mí siempre me ha gustado porque esto serio y neutral pero aquí el guión no le da mucho trabajo más allá de ser un obstáculo para la visión de Cesar en el papel del alcalde, me pareció que no aprovecharon bien su talento. Adam Driver hace el papel de Cesar y aunque se ve que se esforzó al máximo ni su talento pudo dar sentido a este personaje que en un momento está recitando a Hamlet sin motivo alguno y en otro dando un discurso sobre el futuro de la humanidad, esto no lo hace ver como una persona real. Nathalie Emmanuel en el papel de Julia la hija del alcalde nada más existe como interés amoroso y musa de César y tienen tan poca química que se ve forzado. Pero se puede poner todavía peor, Aubrey Plaza, en el papel Wow Platinum es un personaje absurdo, Jon Voight en el papel de Craso parece estar en una película completamente diferente y sobreactúa hasta el punto de la parodia y Shia LaBeouf como Clodio creo que es el más desconcertante de todos, parece canalizar todos los estereotipos de personaje malvado que puedas imaginar.
For me Megalopolis is a disaster on all levels, although I liked that Coppola did what he wanted without caring if something made sense or not and you can't deny that it has good visual effects, for example when Caesar stops time the images are pretty good although when they passed the megalon it looked more out of a video game than a movie with that budget. That analogy of New Rome with modern America is so obvious that it seems funny and the political commentary is clumsy. I think the movie could have been good with that premise of the visionary architect trying to build an ideal society in a corrupt society to me that had potential and could have been exploited but Coppola focused more on extraneous subplots, underdeveloped characters and philosophical musings that never quite fit.
Para mí Megalopolis es un desastre en todos los niveles, aunque me ha gustado que Coppola hizo lo que quiso sin importarle si algo tenía sentido o no y no se puede negar que tiene buenos efectos visuales, por ejemplo cuando Cesar detiene el tiempo las imágenes son bastante buenas aunque cuando pasaban el megalon parecía más sacado de un videojuego que de una película con ese presupuesto. Esa analogía de la Nueva Roma con la América moderna es tan obvia que parece chistoso y los comentarios políticos son torpes. Yo creo que la película pudo haber sido buena con esa premisa del arquitecto visionario que intenta construir una sociedad ideal en una sociedad corrupta para mí eso tenía potencial y se pudo explotar pero Coppola se enfocó más en subtramas extrañas, personajes subdesarrollados y reflexiones filosóficas que nunca encajaron bien.
And even though the ending of Megalopolis tries to salvage all the chaos that was the movie I'm not able to recommend it as a good movie because it's not. When Caesar is finally able to build his Megalopolis but Clodio arrives to sabotage because in this life you can miss anything but a nag and Caesar confronts protesters and delivers a speech about his vision of a better future that ends up convincing everyone, it's as if the movie wants to give the message that even though the current generation is too corrupted by the old ways to manage to live ideally there is hope for the future through the next generation. My score for Megalopolis being condescending is 5/10, I give it that score giving credit to the audacity of the director because Coppola made the movie he wanted to make no matter what it sold. The plot is a jumbled mess, the dialogue is a mess and although the actors have talent they were not allowed to exploit it and could not save Megalopolis.
Y aunque el final de Megalopolis trata de salvar todo el caos que fue la película no soy capaz de recomendarla como una buena película porque no lo es. Cuando por fin Cesar puede construir su Megalopolis pero llega Clodio sabotear porque en esta vida puede faltar todo menos un fastidioso y Cesar se enfrenta a manifestantes y pronuncia un discurso sobre su visión de un futuro mejor que termina convenciendo a todos, es como si la película quisiera dar el mensaje de que aunque la generación actual esté demasiado corrompida por las viejas costumbres para lograr vivir de forma ideal hay esperanza para el futuro a través de la siguiente generación. Mi puntuación para Megalopolis siendo condecendiente es 5/10, le doy esa puntuación dándole crédito a la audacia del director porque Coppola hizo la película que quería hacer sin importar lo que vendiera. La trama es un revoltillo, los diálogos son un desastre y aunque los actores tienen talento no se les permitió explotarlo y no pudieron salvar a Megalopolis.
