Some Training & Job Seeking Advice for PI's & Public

So, I will share something with you, of practical import, no silly fun articles on obscure topics today, just practical sense, because this actually may help quite a number of you, in your day to day life, and occupations, and I can actually talk about this openly without having to be vague because its all just general PI stuff that I picked up over the years, if you work in policing, or are an investigator, or even a Journalist, you will find this particularly useful.

As it was, I had a job interview lined up for 10:00am this morning, had a good night rest, slept early, woke up at 5:30am and began to prepare for the interview, and as one does one of the first things you consider is, where is it, and how am I getting there?

Well, for an interview, I am certainly always open to driving, but as for regular transportation, I always catch trains, and this is for a variety of reasons, as a result I contacted the employer and had to withdraw my interview, because it would not be viable for me to work there anyway, to far off the train line.

Now, before I drill into some practical information for you, I always tell people, in a colloquial way, I basically “see car crashes” which, I am sure many people who have worked in front line motor claims do, I am not unique in that regard, and by that I mean, when I am driving around, my mind, is constantly, seeing, every potential car crash that there could be, when people do this, or people do that, and as a result, I quite dislike driving, which is ironic, for a gentleman that spent close to ten years in motor, I very much, do not feel safe on the roads, so many things can go wrong, so very easily and my ability to calculate and mitigate harm to myself, dramatically decreases, instead of dealing with a fixed set of variables that run more or less like clockwork, I then have to try and calculate all the variables of other drivers, which, is impossible to do.

Thus, as a result, I very much dislike driving, some may even go so far to say I am afraid of it, afraid would not be the right phrase, but I am acutely aware of how dangerous it is, which is pretty much why, I am never in locations that are off the train line.

So, what are the learning outcomes from this? Essentially, when I am looking for a role, it needs to be on a trainline.

Without going into a paragraph by paragraph verbose elaboration, let me give you some bullet points, as to why I personally, always travel by trains, as much as possible, unless I cant.

  • Let’s be honest, I drink often late into the night, having a licence to drive is important, so the last thing I would want to do is risk it, by being potentially, slightly over in the morning and getting pinged by an RBT.

  • I “See” Car Crashes, and have a degree of fear, but also acute awareness of what can go wrong, and how it goes wrong, so when I am driving, I am constantly calculating these things, and its actually quite brain draining.

  • Security – If, you are in a situation where you may be assaulted, or hurt, or otherwise, trains, are much safer, you simply notify the guard, and they will either lock said carriage door, invite you into the guard room, or whatever it happens to be, even as a member of the public, and, police notified and board the train at next station, you are quite literally, always, one train station away from help, that is not so on the roads.

  • If you are actually “working” and you get stuck in traffic on a highway, you are quite literally stuck, if you get stuck on a train, worse case scenario, despite the fact its not “official procedure” if need be, you can actually, get out of trains, fairly easily, if you just ask the guard and explain your situation, jump the fence, hail a taxi, grab a go get, and hey presto, your back on your way.

  • Information gathering, the amount of corporate secrets, society gossip, news, government goings on, or otherwise, I obtained, over spending close to 20 hours a week, on trains, is astronomical, I honestly, could tell you stories for, years, there are times, even in insurance, I would have team leaders of other insurance companies that per chance, just decided to sit in front of me, and open their emails on the way to work, and I began to observe, huh, I can read their emails in the reflection, useful, and the conversations, people will just have full on high power, quite clearly confidential conversations in broad daylight, in front of like 80+ People.

  • Use of time, that hour + commute a day via train, is useful, its where you study, do your paperwork, catch up on news, all that sort of thing, yes, you can listen to the radio of course in the car, but, via train, if you do need to do paperwork or want to study, do a university degree etc, you do that, to and from work, on the train.

  • Specifically, I always catch trains, given the choice, at very specific carriages and locations, generally speaking, the safest place, is, last carriage, back left, upper deck, you are right next to the guard, you are right next to the door, there is nothing behind you, because your back is to the wall, which means no one is looking over your shoulder, and generally, the CCTV camera is right over your head.

  • The gossip, I love the gossip, love listening to the day-to-day conversations sometimes, that to, helps you collate useful information.

  • Lots more tips and tricks for foot surveillance people on trains, but I will leave it at that, I spent, 20 hours a week, for roughly 6 years on trains, you pick up a thing or to.

  • I like Trains 😊

So yes, if you ever caught the train with me, yes, I was “spying on you” long before I actually was even a PI to be honest, not to do anything with it, but, if you start yapping Infront of me, or crack open your laptop and I can see it, yeah, I’m going to look, wouldn’t you? Could be something interesting going on.

There were a few insurance companies back in the day actually, where I would know, more or less, what their entire day plan was, because they would discuss it, Infront of me, while I had astronomy podcasts going in the other ear, never told anyone of course, just kept that to myself and used it to know when to call them and when not to, but I had a lot of that stuff going on I never even talk about.

Anyway up, bright eyed and bushy tailed, Cup of Coffee, time to pound the pavement as they say and see what’s happening, along the train line, did you guys ever get the raise? (train folks) I hope so, you deserve it.

Please mind the gap when boarding and alighting from the train, particularly at Parramatta 😊
