The Fracture Is Coming

For now, it looks like Democrats are the divided party. Their debates are loud, public, and occasionally messy — but they’re mostly tactical. The fights are about how to win, or how to confront Trump — not what they believe, and certainly not whether to confront him. Tactical splits heal quickly when a party is united in opposition. And being in the minority tends to concentrate the mind.
So while the ‘Democrats in disarray’ storyline is getting more attention this week, it isn’t fractious enough to derail the party’s midterm strategy. The big ideological debate about the future of the party won’t happen until the 2027–28 Democratic presidential primaries.
Republicans, by contrast, are living inside a cult of personality. Their unity isn’t ideological or tactical. It’s gravitational — held together by one man. And the problem with cults of personality is that when the personality loses touch with reality, the whole structure begins to wobble.

What Does Ghislaine Maxwell Know?

Having been upgraded from a penitentiary to a prison camp — the equivalent of moving from a Travelodge to a Trump hotel — the late Jeffrey Epstein’s sex trafficking co-conspirator seems to be getting what she wants. A commutation from Trump could follow.
What has Maxwell done to deserve this? The answer is a known unknown. Maxwell has said she never saw Trump ‘in any inappropriate setting.’ We also know that his administration is showering her with benefits. The unknown is why anyone would see this as acceptable.

Our Socialist Future

National socialism is at the heart of Trumpism, which currently controls all three branches of government. Democratic socialism is on the march in the Democratic party.
Why would the richest, most advanced economy in the world be re-examining the fundamentals of its social compact? I have two names for you: Elon Musk and Brian Kelly.
Last week Elon Musk’s company awarded him the richest pay package in human history. If Musk meets his targets, he will be paid $1 trillion… Tesla has just had the worst year in the history of the company. Elon Musk made the brand toxic. Tesla sales around the world fell off a cliff… In every other business, a CEO who hobbled his company in this way would be fired. But Tesla’s board gave Musk a… huge raise?
Brian Kelly… is the recently fired coach of LSU’s football team. Kelly was hired by LSU in 2021. He was given a ten-year, $95 million contract. Last week he was fired by LSU for poor performance. Four years into his contract, his team has consistently gotten worse. Kelly is demanding that he be paid the $54 million remaining on his contract. For doing nothing.
