Odds and Ends — 24 August 2025

The Pentagon has for weeks been planning a military deployment to Chicago as President Donald Trump seeks to crack down on crime, homelessness and undocumented immigration, in a model that could later be used in other major cities.
The Chicago effort would further expand Trump’s use of military force domestically, even when state and local authorities call the idea unwelcome and unwarranted. Administration officials have defended such deployments, arguing that they are taking necessary steps to bring back law and order.

Maybe I’m going out on a limb here, but this will not be well received in Chicago.

This explains why Ukraine has put so much effort into their recently unveiled Flamingo missiles. No one can tell them to not fire them at a Target of their choosing.

Ukraine Is Striking Russia Harder

Ukraine has developed a world-class long-range strike capability. Their strikes in the past few months, especially against the Russian oil industry, reinforce that Russia cannot win this war.
