Serendipity:

While going down a Wikipedia rabbit hole, I found out that during the American Civil War, the Condederacy had a (small) Marine Corps. Weird factoid: its highest ranking noncom (formerly a British Royal Marine) Sergeant Major of the Confederate Marine Corps Edwin Wallace was appointed to that rank on 1 February 1864, only to be demoted (no reason cited by Wikipedia) to private on 1 July, and then deserted on 30 July 1864.
