Democracy Is More Than Following Political Instructions

Election happens every where in each country and we always hear people in higher position asking to "vote for the right candidate". However, no one has ever clarified the valid reason that why they should get voted. To be honest, how would we know who is the right candidate? I personally believe that it should totally depends on the voter only, they should make that decision for themselves not under any influence. This is one of the basic principles of democracy. Bangladesh is a democratic country, so we should take that as an opportunity.

I know that it sounds easy if someone else is guiding to vote for a particular candidate also when these candidate appears clearly better than the others. So, some people wants to be guided toward the better option. This is what usually happens but I think it would create more problems than it solves. What if after they win they do the opposite things which we had expected from them. Everyone lies about doing this and that, they actually care about themselves only not the citizen. And if we choose someone wrong it would back fire at us. Then who would we blame? It's better to study every candidates background, who without any power have done social related works in the past then we can tell if they are suitable for this position.

When I think about my kids and I think about what kind of society I want to give them, makes me wonder about the whole situation. Honestly, I would want them to grow up in a society where they can live freely, wear what they want, have freedom of speech, question any wrong doings, free to think, make their own decisions. So, If leaders and media starts influencing people to exactly vote for a specific person, then I think many people might stop thinking critically. These people are only going to follow the instructions given to them rather than carefully considering the issues and candidates.

Maybe we all are forgetting the meaning of democracy, it does not only mean about choosing leaders. Democracy is there to protect our freedom of thought and individual choice. In Bangladesh, we have people of different religions and different cultures with different values, and priorities. A candidate who seems perfect to one person may not seem right to another. So, citizens should be able to make their own decisions and this will eventually show respect for the other differences.

However, it's not a wrong thing to provide recommendations. But everyone should explain why they support a particular candidate. This helps the voters to learn and make choices wisely. So, the only important difference is that people are aware of their choices and they are being encouraged to think for themselves rather than being told by someone else about what they should do. People needs to start learning from now on and take decisions by their own perspectives. For that reason, if we want democracy to work as it should then it will be the best when voters are thoughtful, informed and free to choose according to their own conscience. That freedom is worth protecting for future generations, including my daughters. I don't want my children to grow up in fear and not being able express what they want. So, the adult people needs to decide the best for the society.

Being influenced to vote a candidate can backfire if not properly explained. Thanks for sharing.
