Evolution of a Blog...

This blog seems to have come and gone a lot in the nine years and change since it first began.

Originally, this was an art blog that was purely dedicated to the "Life and Times" of the Red Dragonfly Gallery — which was our brick-and-mortar art gallery and gift shop here in our small coastal tourist town.

Due to a series of mishaps along the way we ended up closing the gallery because it was just not financially viable to keep it going after a significant rent increase was announced for the space we were leasing. Moving wasn't in the cards, either, as we were sitting with pretty close to zero cash reserves.

That closure subsequently turned out to be a blessing in disguise because a few months later we ended up with Covid and Covid lockdowns that kept many businesses from even having their doors open for quite a while. And we definitely saw the impact that had here in our local town where many of our colleagues in the Arts and Crafts business shuttered their doors, for good.

After that, I decided to just use this as an occasional "Legacy footnote" where I would also talk about ongoing things in the art business here in our town. But that also fell by the wayside mostly because we live busy lives and I didn't know what to have time to update and chase new stories.

I also considered turning this into just a general blog about art and topics that were currently important in the art world but that was another research project I quickly lost interest in.

Then there was the possibility of just turning the blog into a showcase of my own photography... but I didn't really want to take what felt too much like a "low effort content" route here on Hive, where that sort of thing is typically frowned upon. The "workaround" has turned out to be that I simply use those photos to illustrate my posts about unrelated things.

Subsequently, it ended up being a place where I would occasionally post some pieces of interest regarding local political developments and business decisions that were changing the entire nature of our town, often as a result of very questionable City Government decisions.

Which is pretty much where I have ended up at this point, mostly writing about business and social related events in our town, specifically those that seem to be affecting everybody and causing a fair amount of ruckus and uproar.

I realize this is a very niche sort of approach to be taking but I wanted to keep at least a footprint going here as a sort of memory of things happening and tip of the hat to our own old gallery. After all, we were part of the business community here.

It was never going to be a very frequent thing. I'm lucky I find something new to write about once or twice a month and that's really okay. And maybe it'll end up providing a record of sorts for people who are curious about stories and issues of importance of affected the town over the years.

If nothing else, at least it'll be something I can refer to back to for my own benefit at some point later if I need to know when something happened and what exactly the outcome was.

Which all goes to show that — in their original configuration — most blogs were pretty personal affairs and not really intended to be news organs so much as something akin to letters to the editor or letters from people's lives. And that's really good enough for me.
