I Admit I'm A Squirrel
There seems two ways of approaching this world war three panic - hoard, or take a more laissez faire approach, shrug, and say 'well, I can't control that, so I'll focus on other things'.
You'd think, as someone who prefers to be minimalist, I'd have less - but in this case, I think getting more in is the least I can do.
Having gone through my COVID supplies (they were going out of date, and we were moving house, and I wasn't financially able to replenish what I had) I thought maybe 'getting a shop in' would be a good idea. We were talking about it in the beach carpark, where all important conversations are held, like ailments (hips, knees, hormones), electric bikes, crowds, dogs, worrying about kids, and world war three.
Most of us were just worried about the fuel prices going up as Australians panic buy petrol and diesel. A friend of mine has a light plane and he'd already filled it to the brim, warning aviation fuel would go through the roof, which we're already seeing in some airline flight cost increases. As I edit this post for publication they've released 20 percent of Aussie fuel reserves to top up rural and agricultural fuel supplies that keep the country ticking and diesel is up the $2.70 AUD.
Were you paying attention? This is a potoroo, not a squirrel. It's an Australian marsupial, which don't save food for hard times, but are active foragers, relyng heavily on fungi.
Jamie is more fatalistic - and probably right, as he argues there's no point filling up with fuel because we're just going to run out in a week anyway and we'll have to top up the tanks at whatever the price ends up at. I was going to town anyway so thought I may as well top up the van. The petrol station with the best price (Apco) had long queues, noticeably because everyone was filling up the tanks rather putting in their weekly quota according to budget and need. By the afternoon, many pumps were empty and the Victorian government mandated that service stations have to let the public know about fuel prices the day before, and aren't allowed to raise them after 4 pm.
If fuel prices rise we'll be in more trouble than that - we'll also have supply train issues and the cost of living is going to go sky high. It's hard not to feel a little panic as we've all lived through The Great Toilet Paper shortage of 2020.
I have enough toilet paper, but winter lentils and peanut butter I am lacking.
Of to Aldi I went, to eerily empty shelves. This could, of course, be because of the long weekend just past, and it being the afternoon, and that Aldi is right next to the petrol station, so 'you may as well', right? I got some more rice, oil, sardines (ew, but Jamie likes them) and various non perishables such as stock cubes, tinned tomatoes, oats and panadol (why is it 87 cents at Aldi and over $3 everywhere else?) The last four six packs of oat milk, which we'd run out of anyway. No lentils though. Do people hoard lentils in an apocalypse?
Never fear - the Indian grocers, tucked down a side street, to the rescue. I needed paneer and some spices I'd run out of anyway. I grabbed the last four kg bag of red lentils and the last two bags of green lentils. Winter dal is rescued at least.
At home, stuffing food into my tiny cupboards, I wonder whether I'm being silly or not, and think about starvation in Palestine and how I'm damn lucky my tiny home won't be bombed (I hope) so my food is relatively safe (the chocolate digestives won't last long) and that I can afford to do a bulk shop. I joke with my friends in whatsapp about food we'd forgotten to get that day - turns out everyone of us in that carpark did a shop and fuelled up the car 'just in case'.
Today, I did an online shop as well, 'just in case' - two big bags of flour, some yeast, peanut butter (that's important!), tinned tomatoes, tinned fish, and so on. The cupboards will be totally stuffed, and Jamie will roll his eyes at me. The girls agree with me that sometimes the best way to deal with anxiety is to shop. We joke, of course. To a point.
Okay, I'm a panic buyer, I admit it. I quite admit I'm a squirrel hoarder. I think it's in my DNA, probably some world war two starvation issue. No laissez faire approach here, though I'll pretend to be in order to convince myself not to worry.
What will be will be, I will say, stuffing six big bags of dates into the bedroom cupboard 'just in case'.
Sure, not minimalist behaviour per se, but given the world climate, it's the least I can do.

You could say I'm a little of both. Somehwt prepared and laid back as well. We have food stored away that will last a few days. A small generator with a little extra fuel for it. We have extra batteries and solar powered lights. Do need to purchase a water pump with filter though and replenish our bottled water. Need to get my radios working for long distance comms. And buy more ammo.
I seen where you mentioned Jamie loves sardines. So do I. But Kim hates them. Can't even stand the smell. So I never get to have them. As far as stres shopping, that is my lovely lady all over. If she is stressed it is off to the store for her. I have found in the last few months that writing is my stress relief.
Sounds like you are pretty prepared. We are used to living in vehicles and we are pretty resourceful. You've reminded me to get some methylated spirits in for the spirit stove.
I'm glad you find some calm in writing. I totally get you wife's strategy as well! Of course doe me it's being out in nature.
Oh, she loves getting her hands in the dirt too. I think that is her other safe place is the flowers. She is so happy becuase she noticed the daffodils and wild flowers trying to sprout the other day.

As for food, I'd buy all kinds of canned goods (meat, fish, vegetables), spaghetti, and grains. But I hope there won't be a nuclear winter, and I won't have to stock up on food.
Oh god if it's a nuclear winter I'm not even sure you'll have enough... Plus you'd have to protect against theft. I sincerely hope it does happen.
If a nuclear winter hits the Northern Hemisphere, summer temperatures will drop to -10 degrees Celsius. The most sensible option would be to emigrate to Australia or New Zealand. In that case, I'd need advice on where to buy an affordable house in a quiet location.
Affordable houses in Australia 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 what's your budget? But yes that would be sensible. Get here before it happens and I'm sure they won't send you back.
I looked now and realized that for 50k I can only buy an old trailer. And if I sell my apartment in a small town, I'll buy two whole trailers in Australia :)
I've kept large supplies of things here always. If I had the money I bought bulk of the things we use because I never knew when we'd have money again. Hence 5 freezers that were often full, the pantry, and a root cellar. I don't have so much on hand these days, but I still buy in bulk.
I'm a big believer in bulk buys. I don't know why, Mum never did. Just seems to make ecomonc sense and I don't have to shop as much..
For me, who can't shop much now, it still makes sense, and often bulk is cheaper.
I think it is simply being practical to stock up under the circumstances. It is also extremely important to remain calm and happy! Good vibes go a long way to defusing war, and staying clear of mind control techniques that are in full force these days.
But six bags of dates?! Not high on my doomsday supply list.
Ha it's because we don't eat sweet food much. I don't often buy biscuits not do I make cake. When we get sweet cravings usually a few dates do the trick! When we were travelling Europe we used to eat peanut butter on oatcakes with torn dates on top. Because we invented that on the Santander ferry we called them 'ferry cakes' 🤣
Good name! I make sure I have lots of butter, frozen or dried fruits (not dates though), organic pastry flour, eggs and sugar so that I can always make muffins to satisfy my sweet tooth. Oh, and chocolate, which I buy in 5kg blocks.
Man I made chai oar biscuits yesterday (are you familiar with Anzac cookies? Like those with spices) and ate four and the woke up with migraine. Whether the two are connected I don't know but I can't handle much sugar. I even cut the sugar in half!! It sounds alike you enjoy making. Mum does, and then foists her biscuits experiments on us.
i fucking love this. and yes, not really a good time to minimize, as there might not always be an option to get what you need tomorrow.

hm perhaps a stock-up on sardines, dates, chickpeas and lentils wouldn't be amiss. ultimately, it won't make a difference in case of nuclear war, or whatever else these psychos got in store for us, but it gives us at least the illusion of being prepared.

Potoroos are wild. They are the tiniest little kangaroo like creature. Jamie nearly died when he saw one for the first time. Not common round where I live sadly.

What's this with you and peanut butter? Though, I admit I do like it occasionally.
I haven't filled up the car yet, we don't do much mileage, a tank can normally last us up to 2 months as we only do a few local trips each week. I hope by the time I need to fill up, the price would have stabilised a little and I'd be used to the higher price that it won't feel that expensive.

I think it's because we dont have desert. Gives you a protein hit and fills you up. Idk we are both wildly addicted. A spoonful a day!
Because we live really and work 40 mins away we have to fill up. What's the fuel price round you right now? We are facing shortage because if panic buying and the price going up. It's crazy. They have never seen British fuel prices.

Unleaded is around £1.44 a litre. Costco is around 10p cheaper but that's 30 miles round trip. I may pop over soon and stock up on groceries at the same time.
Have you tried making your own peanut butter? It's a bit of a chore but quite satisfy to make your own food especially if you get your hands on some good quality peanuts.
We used to have a wholefoods store where there was a peanut butter machine. Prob still is somewhere. Most of our peanut butter is pretty good. No additives. I doubt my blender would handle it. It barely manages pesto.
During this war, I am totally laid back. I learned that I was overreacting during Covid but I kept thinking that if a war would happen, going back to the jungle of papua would be a great idea, they've got everything down there and it's literally far from civilization (except a bit too close to Australia). Maybe I should sample some of Indonesian remote islands again to find where I could go eitherway if everybody nuked each other, that'd be the end of us.
That's a good idea. It's nice to know those places exist. I don't think Australians exist
Do you know anywhere you could stay? Yeah if we are nuked that's the end. I think of all the Indo islands that rely on fishing...I think the water would be poisoned more than it is already. Ah this makes me too sad. You can always island hop down here and I'd house you Max. Mind you you'd have to squeeze in with all the other Hive folk escaping the north
😁 You are doing what you can to survive… and the fact that you’ve kept dates and peanut butter seems ideal to me; I would have done the same if I could. Yet keeping calm is crucial. You have hens that lay eggs, and a garden to harvest from. This will help you greatly as well. I can’t help but mention the bikes that will solve a big problem for you and Jamie, and they also translate into health. You see, you’ve got it all!
Haha yes at least I have a great bike. The chickens aren't laying at the moment so I'm thinking we would probably eat them unless we can catch fish. Haha we do think about it a lot. At least we have a plan!
I’ve completely lost touch with petrol prices these days—cycling everywhere does that to you 😅. I can see both sides of your discussion, though: part of me agrees with trying to fill up and store, and part of me sides with Jamie. It feels like you can’t really win either way, and both options can be a bit daunting.

I love sardines too—definitely something I picked up from my dad. Recently, I thought I’d switch back to having salmon for brekkie, but I quickly realised I actually prefer sardines 😂. My husband’s not much of a seafood fan (though he loves sushi and sashimi), but he’ll still eat my sardines because I load them up with herbs and spices.
If you’ve got the space, I think stocking up like you’re doing is a smart move — it gives peace of mind while we all hope for the best.

We also have the room under the house hahah....but I think what will be will be. Perhaps we can try fishing... We do have salmon out there but it's Australia salmon which isn't as nice. I like it smoked though.
You know from living in site I have a lot of resourcefulness should shit really happen. Certainly if we lost fuel. It's just everything is so spread out in Australia that we can't just cycle down the tow path and get to Sainsbury's easily! I have bought an electric bike I totally adore (it's also hilly here) but it's still take me two hours to get to work on a dangerous highway. Even to the next town where my mum is, twenty minutes to drive, the path is mostly a gravel track that often diverts in off-road territory. If they only spent more money on connecting twons via cycle routes!!
Ewww sardines!! They must stink out your barge!! Do you put the tin outside straight away? As I'm afraid I couldn't visit until you've fumigated the place. I go nuts at Jamie if he doesn't put the tin out immediately and wash his plate. Then I have to open all the doors. They are the ONE thing I can't abide even though I totally get why people like them! I get the super cheap ones for my chooks as a protein top up for them. Gag.

Hello everyone I hope you are all good and well today in this post is some of the evidence to prove my case
If you didn't know I've been getting downvoted for a long time on Hive
They have been trying to bully me with downvotes and words but it doesn't affect me I've been online for over 25 years
So I've dealt with people like this before it's nothing new
But what they are doing is bad Very badi joined steemit like everyone else thinking it offers freedom but I must say steemit offered much more freedom than Hive does
Everyone already knows I only post my own original content I have no need to steal anything from anyone
I've been labelled a lot of things on Hive 😂 by the biggest farmers scammers and downvoters
