Democracy or Democrazy

Greetings!

One of the aspects of human lives is governance which is a way of administering a particular entity and persons so as to make the entity and the people living there law abiding and orderly.

Other than this, governance is also put in place just to make people enjoy the dividends of what governance stands for. But for governance to take place, there must be a selected few at the helm of affairs and these selected few are the administrators who have been chosen, elected or selected to administer the state of affairs of a country and its inhabitants who are the citizens.

But like I have said earlier, we have different kinds of governance, but in response to the topic today, we will be looking at one of types of governance which is believed to be that of the people which is DEMOCRACY, a government of the people, by the people and for the people.

Looking at this simple definition of democracy, one would realize that democracy is the best form of government which is devoid or should be devoid of dictatorship as we have in the other system and this is because it's the people's center.

However, what we now practice as democracy most especially in my own country Nigeria is the reverse of what is said or defined about the word democracy.

In my country, what we practice as democracy is more or less a totalitarian or dictatorship system of government which to me is not part of democracy.

Although, before people get elected or selected into government offices, they tend to be as humane as possible, but whenever they get elected and form their cabinet, they turn out to be monsters and dictators and instead of them serving us as our leaders, they become dictators and their policies also become anti-human.

As if this is not enough, they also became unfaithful to their campaign promises and began to amass the commonwealth of people into their personal coffers. Also, another thing they do is to leave government for politics and neglect all aspects of governance they were being elected or selected for, such as, infrastructure development, welfare of the people, just to mention but a few.

So, what we all believe to have been the people's centered government would now turn out to be the government of the few high class.

And due to this reason, I in my own personal view have seen democracy as a failure in my country as nothing tangible has been achieved in terms of governance since the advent of democracy in my country.

Although some of the elected and selected officials are trying their best to rule with the fear of God, most of these people or let me say, a larger percentage of these people rule with absolute power that corrupt absolutely.

But in my own opinion, one thing I think should be done for us to have a better democracy in my country is to devolute power. Power should be decentralized and giving to the people. Power should be taking away from the the hand of the elected and selected few and handed over to the entire populace. It's when this is done that people would be able to challenge the elected officials in government and even recall them when they are not performing.

In conclusion, democracy is the best system of government throughout the world and the fact that it's not working here in my country doesn't stop it from being the best.
