Government For The People, Ruined By The People

Last May of this year, I return to my Elementary alma matter school, to do the same thing I did every time I return to this place, and that was to elect representatives that I think would help to address me and the people's concerns about issues such as healthcare, education and economy. That was both my right and privilege as someone who lives in a country with democratic government. In, this type of government, the people has the power to decide the politicians who will serve as their representatives in the government through majority vote. So in theory, the power is supposed to rest within the people, since if the politicians do not do their job well, people will not elect them in the next election. If implemented properly, Democracy can be the best form of government that we have today, but that that only works if the people vote the right leader, and sad to say, it's often not, because people failed to use their power appropriately.

Both good and bad rulers can exist in any type of government, but for a democratic government to have a bad ruler, half of the blame goes to the people because they are the reason why that ruler in the position. However, this kind of mistake is not something that cannot be corrected. People need to just not vote for that ruler again, but for some reason, people in my country continues to vote the same ruler, even after they keep breaking the promises they spoke during every elections. At worst, we even have politicians who were convicted of crimes and corruption, but still were able to hold a position in the government. For instance, during the last election, there is one candidate running for a senatorial seat while at the same time, being in the FBI's Most Wanted List. He did not win, but what's baffling is the fact that he was able to run for the seat and that the guy still gets 5.6 million votes. So, you just have to wonder, if people still votes this kind of monster, how better can they be in choosing their leader?

Well, for most cases, people are willing to sell their vote for a few pennies, but through years, religion has also become such a thing that ruins democracy. It's either the leader of religious groups will endorsed a politician or run himself for a position and tell their followers to vote for them. And then the followers, will just believe pastor says, taking away the persons ability to make his own choice. I guess, another reason would be because people are just lazy and do not want to spend time to examine the candidates properly or that even if they vote a good candidate, it will not win either way.

So when it comes to the well-being of my countryman, having a democratic government, may just affect it more negatively than positively. While the power to elect a leader lies, to the people, the fact that people's choice can be easily be swayed by money or be dictated by their religious leaders, easily ruins democracy even though it was supposed to be a great for of government in theory. Still, I think Democracy was still the best form of government for my country. What we need is not to change the government, but for people to learn the power of their vote and how to use it correctly, Until then, I will just continue to do my part and that is to vote.

Thank you for reading my post, and see you in the next one!

What a caption @saydie . Its very sad that when the people decide for themselves who to be in leadership, those in the upper class called the political group will change the people’s choice by manipulating the vote.

They lack conscience and shameless, thinking they are practicing democracy.

It's just going in circles. People choose the wrong leader, and that leader will buy people's votes to keep them in the position.
