Old Enough to Forget Better
In the not-a-shock of the day, Biden has withdrawn from running for a second term as president of the United States of ridiculous politics. He is going to focus on making it through to the end of his current term. These days, I think that the White House has relocated itself next to the Ministry of Silly Walks and is taking its cues from some of the worst screen writers in history. But, at least it is entertaining.
Right?
Meanwhile... In Finland.
Normally the "meanwhile in Finland" would be a cut scene to a person naked sitting in subzero conditions reading a newspaper, carrying his wife on his back in a race for her weight in beer, an ant nest sitting competition, or a battle of air guitarists, but on the day that the US president is just too damn old to run again, the Finnish President and his wife competed in a 24-kilometer (15 mi) river swim. It wasn't a one-off publicity stunt either, as they regularly compete in all kinds of endurance competitions, and last year he came first in his age group in a half-triathlon.
Puts those "heated" golf comments from the US debate in context, eh?
While I am not an ageist and there is a lot of value in experience, I don't think it is too much to ask that an elected president of a country can be expected to physically and mentally make it through their term in the role. Of course and as I intimately know after suffering a stroke caused by a broken artery in my neck at the age of 42, no matter the age or health, there are no guarantees in this life. Health problems occur and accidents happen. But, if we are playing the adds, someone who is in their late seventies or eighties has a far higher likelihood of dying from age related issues than someone in their fifties.
It is ludicrous that people in the "most powerful country on earth" are being given the choice between two candidates who are both statistically unlikely to see the start of the next decade - and that is only five and a half years away. In fact statistically in the United States, both should already be dead.
In 2022, the life expectancy of men at birth in the United States increased by 1.3 years (+1.77 percent) since 2021. In total, the life expectancy amounted to 74.8 years in 2022.
Reality Me
You know what would be an reality series to watch? While there are a lot of crazy politics in the world, since we have turned politics into entertainment, it would be great to see nation leaders of the world debate topics publicly. For instance, a few rounds of presidents debating global energy, pollution, climate change, economy, artificial intelligence and social concerns against each other. Biden
Wouldn't that be fun to watch?
While I don't like politics, nor some of the numerous politicians I have met in person, I also don't think they are all bad as people. However, take my dislike away and just think about them as a face of a country or company perhaps, and there are some that are better than others. Looking at your current leader wherever you are, would you expect them to make your country look good, or foolish? Now, if you think that it is foolish and you are not in North Korea, remember that people in your country have elected them, endorsed them, been willing to even have them run.
As far as I am concerned, people in influential positions of any kind that have power to affect across multiple years, shouldn't be death risks from old age. This goes for those "for life" positions like in the supreme court or federal judges. This is not just because of their risk of death an inopportune times, but also that at those ages, they are also thinking in quite different ways about their own lives and it is likely to affect their decisions which affect people who are yet to live their lives much at all. We don't want people who have no life experience, but we also don't people who have no touch with the reality of those they are making decisions for either.
As I have said many times, politics has reduced the importance of governments heavily, because they have turned it into popularity, not policy. The policies no longer matter to the people now, only the person at the head matters. This results inn policies being made by interest groups influencing policy-makers, and it happens largely out of sight of the people that will be affected by the policies for years to come. The larger the politicians make the spectacle, the more irrelevant the governments they lead become.
How degraded can they become?
You might think "not much" but things are likely to get far, far worse before they get better, or these power-hungry idiots end it completely for us all.

No need to be a chair passionate. They should leave their place for young politicians. Well, I think it doesn't matter for US as obvious that it is not ruled by such old politicians :)
It is all a game of smoke and mirrors.
Debate is a thing of the past.
It is now a name calling lie-athon.
Spreading lies and misinformation is now a long distance marathon here in the political arena...
It is pretty pathetic that we keep playing along, right?
You got that right...
I just wanna take my ball and go play in my own yard.
This game is rigged against us for sure.
Just when they thought it was Biden time, it turned out to be biding time.
I see what you did there.... It might have taken me a few reads to get it....
"Bye-Den"
I for one am glad Biden finally decided to step down and allow another the chance the run the country for a while. I get why American politics has become the joke of the world. We had one guy who was old as dirt (even though the other guy was only three years younger) and a convicted felon with Lord only knows how many accusations against him.
I think we in America need to seriously reconsider how we elect our politicians - perhaps A ninja Warrior competition or a Wrestle mania event along side a spelling be and a a truth detecter permanently attached to them at all times.
See! This is more like it. Make a full game of it.
Shocker. We all saw the handwriting on the wall, but of course mainstream media would rather paint a lie to keep their donors happy
And their sheep following.
I agree IF we can get them to actually debate and not just wait for their turn to spin, lie, and attack. Having a time limit and a cut off as they did for the prior US debate is dumb. I propose instead if you lie, spin, attack, your mic just instantly gets cut off and you lose your turn. Actually answer the questions or lose your turn. Be polite or lose your turn. I want to see actual debates, not what we have now.
I only saw clips of the US ones - In Finland, they don't do it like that at all.
I was pretty shocked to hear that he was dropping out. I mean, we kind of all knew it was coming, but it was still a bit of a shock. I didn't think it would be a voluntary sort of thing. If I remember right the minimum age for the president is something like 45, so how sad is it that we tend to get candidates much further away from that number than closer to it.
Perhaps 70 should be the cut off for presidential candidates. If they want a second term, they have to win at 65ish.
Maybe....

My memory is shitty. So I would reckon that I would be an ok president...at least not worse than current options...
The bar is low. So even I would probably be an improvement.Oh, these general statistics :) I think here we need to take a narrower sample and calculate the probability. A healthy 80-year-old in the United States has a very good chance of living beyond 85 years. As for mental abilities, there are separate statistics. I have seen many people over 80 years of age whose memory was phenomenal when they lectured to young people.
I guess it's nice that the US citizens have a younger option now. I don't know much about Kamala to say if she is better, but at least there are less concerns about age, mental decline, and other things. People can focus more on her ability to lead and platforms. Trump on the other hand, a lot of their party's arguments no longer apply to Kamala, so it would be interesting to see how this election plays out.
It's very interesting how different countries approach endurance and leadership. Maybe this perspective could inspire some needed change in political norms.
Thank you for the food for thought. I think in such cases the one to blame is the closest relative(s). They see the problem and act towards the direction of their preference without thinking the greater good. In this case Mrs Biden and Biden-kids/grandkids. They are all power-hungry...
