My Country's Biggest Problems: Poor Leadership

I was exploring and found this contest in this Community, and I decided to join despite being a non-Asian.

The problems in my country are numerous to the point that I can't mention all of them, and it's the same situation with most other undeveloped countries. My country is Nigeria, located on the African continent. As it stands now, whenever you ask a Nigerian to point out a few problems in the country, bad leadership must be mentioned among the first two. That is to say, if bad leadership doesn't appear as number one, it's definitely going to appear as number two.

There is very poor leadership in my country, and this has given birth to many other problems. In my country, the mode of electing a leader is basically rooted in corruption. And what do you expect from people who lobbied their way into political positions? They're there solely for their personal interests. I know that some of them might try to carry out one or two projects in the country, but their biggest aim and target is to embezzle money and never have the people (citizens) in their hearts.

I know that politicians can never be entirely genuine, but there are people who are capable to some extent and would do better if elected. Unfortunately, these capable individuals are never allowed to be elected because of how manipulative the democratic system is.

One of the ways to solve the problem of bad leadership in Nigeria is to have a free and fair electoral process that helps in electing capable hands. Even when those elected into government positions do not meet expectations, a free and fair election can be used to vote them out and vote in another set. When the system works this way, anyone coming to occupy a government position will know that if they don't perform well, they could be voted out fairly.
