The Left/Right Realignment

In the past, the Republican Party was the party of rich white men, and the Democrats were the party of minorities. That included poor people, women, black people, Latinos, and Asians. Those “minorities” grouped together were larger than the rich white men and upper middle class, so the Democrats were able to beat the Republicans. This was the main strategy during the Obama years, and they continued that strategy after, expecting it to work forever.

Except, because of the nature of progressivism, the Democrats focused their “progress” on ever more obscure and rare minority groups—first the gays, then the trans, and nonbinary, and ever smaller groups of minorities. The problem is by focusing so much on these smaller minorities, they ostracized the pre-existing larger minorities that helped them dominate during the Obama years. They drove away many Latino men, black men, poor white men, and the lower middle class. Now the Democrat coalition of minorities is smaller than the Republican Party coalition, which is no longer just rich white men, but many of the defects from the left who were rejected for not being sufficiently progressive. They refused to give up their rights for the sake of tiny minority groups.

Back in the early 2000s and 2010s, the Democrats were supposed to be the welcoming party, but now the Republicans are the welcoming party. They take all different types of people, whereas the Democrats are more exclusive. You need to be this progressive in order to be on our side. As long as the left does that, they'll never have enough people to beat the other side.

In the past, the Democrats were able to keep a hold of their coalition through their monopoly on the media and education systems where they could peddle their propaganda to teach people to be sufficiently progressive and to always support the Current Thing. But due to technology, the Democrats have lost their grip on that media monopoly and cannot force their propaganda onto enough people to astroturf a progressive coalition that would not otherwise exist.

It seemed like “Cthulhu always swam left” because the Cathedral had a firm control of all mass media. But now the Cathedral is collapsing, and Cthulhu is swimming right. The culture is shifting rightward. The only chance the Democrats have of winning is to stop catering to the most progressive extremes of their smallest minorities, and instead shifting right back toward the center.
