I think we both know this is an understatement of the scale of the movement of souls by orders of magnitude. It is tens of millions that have moved northward.

While it is easy to scoff at the self-deportation program, for folks facing the terrible - and illegal - imprisonment in El Salvador under heinous conditions it is a potential way to avoid that awful fate, while even perhaps improving their chances of lawfully immigrating. It is obviously less expensive than funding police action to arrest those people, so it also can save the USG much expense, danger, and time.
