Putin had access to the sea before, but there is no oil in Ukraine...
Ukraine threatened to set up NATO bases near Russia's borders. After much persuasion, Putin did not allow this.

Yeah NATO encroachment was the height of Western arrogance.
Yeah you're right about access to sea but it's more, buffer-zoning. Also, Coal, fertile land, crimean water supply, stronger position in the water (oil), and so on.
There's like, a whole bunch of reasons why he would do it... whether it's worth a million deaths I suppose is up for debate, apparently!
