KIP Lhokseumawe Equips Students to Become Smart Voters

The Independent Election Commission (KIP) of Lhokseumawe City continues to strengthen voter education for the younger generation by conducting electoral outreach for first-time voters at several schools. The activity, which has been ongoing for the past week, targeted students of SMK Negeri 1 Lhokseumawe on Friday, 25 September 2026.

The outreach took place at SMK Negeri 1 Lhokseumawe, located at Jalan Pramuka No. 74, Gampong Hagu Teungoh, Banda Sakti District, Lhokseumawe City. The arrival of the Lhokseumawe City KIP was welcomed by Siti Anjarwati, S.E., M.Pd., representing the School Principal, alongside the Deputy Principal for Student Affairs, Muhammad, S.T.

The event was attended by all students from Grade 10 through Grade 12, amounting to approximately one thousand students. The students joined the outreach after completing their usual Friday morning observances, which included the recitation of Surah Yasin, blessings upon the Prophet, and collective prayers.

Zainal Bakri, S.Sos., M.Kom.I., a Commissioner of the Lhokseumawe City KIP and the speaker for the event, stated that outreach for first-time voters forms part of efforts to build a young electorate that understands rights, responsibilities, and democratic processes from the moment they exercise their right to vote.

We want high school students in Lhokseumawe City to become more informed, to better understand democracy and the electoral process from the very beginning, before they go to the polling station to exercise their political rights, said Zainal Bakri.

According to Zainal, voter education cannot be limited to election periods alone. An understanding of democracy and elections must be established from the time a person becomes eligible to vote.

Since these are first-time voters, we want to build that understanding early on. They need to know that voting is not simply about showing up at the polling station; there is a process and a responsibility to be understood, he explained.

The outreach materials introduced democracy, electoral systems, the rights and obligations of voters, and the importance of exercising the right to vote responsibly. Students were also guided to recognize the value of respecting differing choices in democratic life.

Zainal noted that young people also need skills to evaluate the information they receive, particularly through social media. Technological development allows political and electoral information to spread rapidly, but not all such information can be trusted at face value.

Young people today are very engaged with social media. That is why they must be able to distinguish reliable information from misinformation. We cannot let unsubstantiated claims shape their understanding of elections, he said.

This outreach is especially timely given the demographic makeup of Lhokseumawe’s electorate. According to the Age-Based Voter Recap from the Continuous Voter Data Update (PDPB) for the Second Quarter of 2026, the total number of voters in Lhokseumawe City stands at 141,596.

Of that total, 43,010 voters belong to Generation Z, those born between 1997 and 2012 — comprising 21,939 male voters and 21,071 female voters.

Generation Y or Millennials, born between 1981 and 1996, form the largest group at 46,949 voters — 22,874 male and 24,075 female.

Together, Generation Z and Generation Y make up 89,959 voters, or approximately 63.53 percent of all registered voters in Lhokseumawe City.

These figures reflect the significant share held by younger and middle-age groups in the city’s voting population. Generation Z in particular is a key demographic that requires focused attention in voter education, especially those preparing to cast a ballot for the first time.

Our data shows that Generation Z is substantial in size. Therefore, education for this group must continue, including through schools. Our goal is for them to be voters in more than just name — we want them to understand the democratic process, Zainal stated.

Beyond Generation Z and Generation Y, the Second Quarter 2026 PDPB data records 35,154 voters from Generation X, 14,907 from the Baby Boomer generation, and 2,687 from the Pre-Boomer generation.

Zainal emphasized that outreach to first-time voters is not intended to direct students toward any particular political choice. Instead, KIP aims to create space for young people to learn about democracy and understand their political rights independently.

Political choice is the right of every citizen. Our role as election administrators is to provide information and understanding so that when they become voters, they cast their ballots knowingly and responsibly, he affirmed.

The Lhokseumawe City KIP will continue to deliver electoral education and outreach across community groups, including first-time voters within educational institutions.

Through these efforts, KIP hopes that the young people of Lhokseumawe City will gain a solid understanding of electoral processes, be able to critically assess information, respect diverse viewpoints, and recognize that participation in democracy is both a fundamental right and a duty of citizenship.

Komisi Independen Pemilihan (KIP) Kota Lhokseumawe terus memperkuat pendidikan pemilih bagi generasi muda melalui sosialisasi kepemiluan kepada pemilih pemula di sejumlah sekolah. Kegiatan yang telah berlangsung sejak sepekan terakhir itu menyasar siswa SMK Negeri 1 Lhokseumawe, Jumat, 25 September 2026.

Sosialisasi tersebut berlangsung di SMK Negeri 1 Lhokseumawe, Jalan Pramuka No. 74, Gampong Hagu Teungoh, Kecamatan Banda Sakti, Kota Lhokseumawe. Kedatangan KIP Kota Lhokseumawe disambut Siti Anjarwati, S.E., M.Pd., yang mewakili Kepala Sekolah, bersama Wakil Kepala Sekolah Bidang Kesiswaan, Muhammad, S.T.

Kegiatan diikuti seluruh siswa kelas X hingga kelas XII yang jumlahnya mencapai sekitar seribuan siswa. Para siswa mengikuti sosialisasi setelah melaksanakan kegiatan rutin Jumat pagi berupa pembacaan Surah Yasin, salawat, dan doa bersama.

Komisioner KIP Kota Lhokseumawe, Zainal Bakri, S.Sos., M.Kom.I., yang menjadi narasumber dalam kegiatan tersebut mengatakan, sosialisasi pemilih pemula merupakan bagian dari upaya membangun pemilih muda yang memahami hak dan kewajiban serta proses demokrasi sejak pertama kali menggunakan hak pilih.

"Kami ingin anak-anak atau siswa sekolah menengah atas di Kota Lhokseumawe menjadi lebih cerdas, lebih memahami demokrasi dan proses pemilihan sejak awal sebelum nanti mereka datang ke tempat pemungutan suara untuk memberikan hak politiknya," kata Zainal Bakri.

Menurut Zainal, pendidikan pemilih tidak cukup hanya diberikan ketika tahapan pemilu berlangsung. Pemahaman mengenai demokrasi dan kepemiluan perlu dibangun sejak seseorang mulai memenuhi syarat sebagai pemilih.

"Karena mereka ini adalah pemilih pemula, maka kita ingin memberikan pemahaman sejak awal. Mereka harus tahu bahwa memilih itu bukan sekadar datang ke TPS, tetapi ada proses dan tanggung jawab yang harus dipahami," ujarnya.

Materi sosialisasi diarahkan untuk memperkenalkan demokrasi, kepemiluan, hak dan kewajiban pemilih, serta pentingnya menggunakan hak pilih secara bertanggung jawab. Para siswa juga diajak memahami pentingnya menghargai perbedaan pilihan dalam kehidupan demokrasi.

Zainal mengatakan, generasi muda juga perlu memiliki kemampuan untuk menyaring informasi yang mereka terima, terutama melalui media sosial. Perkembangan teknologi membuat informasi mengenai politik dan kepemiluan dapat diterima dengan cepat, tetapi tidak seluruh informasi tersebut dapat langsung dipercaya.

"Anak-anak sekarang sangat dekat dengan media sosial. Karena itu, mereka harus mampu membedakan mana informasi yang benar dan mana yang tidak. Jangan sampai informasi yang belum jelas kebenarannya justru memengaruhi cara mereka memahami pemilu," katanya.

Sosialisasi tersebut menjadi semakin relevan jika melihat komposisi pemilih di Kota Lhokseumawe. Berdasarkan Rekapitulasi Pemilih Berdasarkan Usia hasil Pemutakhiran Data Pemilih Berkelanjutan (PDPB) Triwulan II Tahun 2026, jumlah pemilih di Kota Lhokseumawe mencapai 141.596 jiwa.

Dari jumlah tersebut, sebanyak 43.010 pemilih masuk kelompok Generasi Z atau mereka yang lahir pada rentang 1997–2012. Jumlah itu terdiri atas 21.939 pemilih laki-laki dan 21.071 pemilih perempuan.

Sementara Generasi Y atau milenial yang lahir pada 1981–1996 menjadi kelompok terbesar dengan 46.949 pemilih, terdiri atas 22.874 laki-laki dan 24.075 perempuan.

Jika Gen Z dan Gen Y digabungkan, jumlahnya mencapai 89.959 pemilih atau sekitar 63,53 persen dari keseluruhan pemilih Kota Lhokseumawe.

Data tersebut menunjukkan besarnya porsi generasi muda dan dewasa dalam struktur pemilih Kota Lhokseumawe. Gen Z sendiri menjadi salah satu kelompok penting yang perlu mendapat perhatian dalam pendidikan pemilih, khususnya mereka yang baru pertama kali menggunakan hak pilih.

"Data kita menunjukkan Gen Z memiliki jumlah yang cukup besar. Karena itu, pendidikan pemilih kepada generasi ini harus terus dilakukan, termasuk melalui sekolah. Kita ingin mereka tidak hanya menjadi pemilih secara administratif, tetapi juga memahami proses demokrasi," kata Zainal.

Selain Gen Z dan Gen Y, data PDPB Triwulan II Tahun 2026 mencatat Generasi X sebanyak 35.154 pemilih, Baby Boomers 14.907 pemilih, serta Pre Boomers sebanyak 2.687 pemilih.

Zainal menegaskan, sosialisasi kepada pemilih pemula tidak dimaksudkan untuk mengarahkan siswa kepada pilihan politik tertentu. Sebaliknya, KIP memberikan ruang bagi generasi muda untuk mengenal demokrasi dan memahami hak politik mereka secara mandiri.

"Pilihan politik adalah hak masing-masing warga negara. Tugas kami sebagai penyelenggara adalah memberikan informasi dan pemahaman agar ketika mereka menjadi pemilih, mereka bisa menggunakan hak pilihnya dengan sadar dan bertanggung jawab," ujarnya.

KIP Kota Lhokseumawe akan terus melakukan pendidikan dan sosialisasi kepemiluan kepada berbagai kelompok masyarakat, termasuk pemilih pemula di lingkungan sekolah.

Melalui kegiatan tersebut, KIP berharap generasi muda Kota Lhokseumawe memiliki pengetahuan kepemiluan yang memadai, mampu menyaring informasi secara kritis, menghargai perbedaan pilihan, serta memahami bahwa partisipasi dalam demokrasi merupakan bagian dari hak dan tanggung jawab sebagai warga negara.
