Be careful about bringing animals from the dead

Have you ever watched Pet Sematary? It is a classic horror movie. There was a new version recorded in 2019. But the classic is still amazing. It is mostly a zombie movie, but with the pets coming to life instead. What about the extinct animals coming to life? Of course not like zombies in the movie. But our planet has suffered mass extinctions during its eras. The most famous was the dinosaurs and the big meteor that hit and altered the environment on most of the planet. We also had extinctions associated to our greed in conquering the environment and changing it. Should we bring any back to life?

I am a biologist and I would love to see some animals from the past alive, but for now only human and AI representation from what existed of the past we can see. Even other human species that we derived from would be amazing to see around. I collaborated once in a project that was trying to recover the genome of Homo Neandertalis. The DNA was so degraded that it was difficult to perform some genetic analysis.
Recently, a private company announced that it brought the Dire wolf back to life. The news was more what it really is the reality. They genetically modified the grey wolf with the traits that they knew this extinct species had. So they are not a direct clone, it is just a regular wolf with its genetic material modified. But it brought back the discussion of bringing animals that we don't see around anymore. What are the impacts on the current ecosystem? The dire wolf existed at the same time that the Mammoth existed, known as the Great Ice Age, so we have different ecosystems compared to that era. I don't think that animals that lived in that era would be nice to have in the wild because of that.
What about the animals that are almost extinct or recently extinct? Maybe those could be more interesting to have a type of initiative that involves genetics. Especially those that were influenced directly by our hands touching their ecosystem. Probably the Dodo bird would be awesome to see again in the wild. An endemic bird from Madagascar Island that had its population excitented due introduction of invasive species by humans in the Island. The Yangtze River Dolphin is another example of an affected animal due to human activities. So sad to see smart mammals like dolphins disappearing because of human activities in Rivers and Seas, many other species are also affected by pollution. I would love to see this Chinese Dolphin back, but first, we would need to improve the current state of our water bodies.

Extinction of species can be considered a natural process, but lately we have been affecting this process a lot in many of our "roommates" on this planet. I wouldn't want to see dinosaurs brought back to life, I don't want to live in a Jurassic Park movie in real life. However, if we at least try to save the animals that are recently extinct or even those that are almost in that status, that would be awesome and I would be happy to see them around.

Bzzt! Prefiro não trazer animais a vida, é demais responsabilidade! Quem cuidaria deles?

I think we must first protect the rest and repair the damage we have caused to their environment.
Yes if not they are dying again 😝😝
Bringing back some animals may spell doom for the human race. But protecting the ones available should be our priority
Some animals, those ones extincted by dumbass humans like the dodo, should be brought back... It should not be brought back what has extincted in natural way because if it can escape free in nature, who knows what could happen
Yeah dodo would be nice to see back around !!
Why? You scared of finding a dinosaur stomping your house?😂😂😂
You're right though, a lot of the animals from old were a menace and in the world of today, I don't think any animal alive would stand up to them. Humans have really dealt a number on the ecosystem. And it's still happening. And it will keep happening.
Hahaha it wouldn’t be fun just watch Jurassic Park and you will see 😝
That movie of the pet cemetery traumatized me as a child, my neighbor at that time had a cat identical to the one that appeared in the movie hahaha, anyway whenever they repeated it on Sunday nights I watched it, it is one of my favorites. I also found incredible the news about the puppies with genetic material from the direwolves, I think something similar was done with mice and the genetic material from the mammoth, but this last one I didn't check if it was true or just fake news.
It really would be amazing to see some of the extinct animals alive, but you also have to take into account the risks haha. The best thing is what you say at the end, it is a thousand times preferable to protect those species that struggle not to become extinct, the list is getting longer and longer.
These genetic experiments reminds me South Park the mad scientist mixing different species hehehe.
So ver os filmes! Sempre da errado os parquea de dinossauro
Verdade :)
I never even knew there was anything like bringing back dead animals. The thumbnail image was quite scary and that was what drew me to reading this post. I hope this genetic science wouldn’t have adverse effects. The movie you mentioned is already scary me out
We should careful all the animals we keep because we need to take care with them and love them.
I agree with you!

Not enough genetic material from the dodo exists to stand a chance of bringing it back. We may get close to a mammoth, but there is still a lot of genetic gaps that need to be filled in, and then what? Probably exist in zoos? Animals that we eradicated and can resurrect I think we should if possible, but for the most part we just don't have the entire genome, and then there would be no diversity in the population.
It's going to take much longer than people think to bring these things back, and dinosaurs never will. There just isn't enough DNA. Now if you could invent a real pet cemetery, now that would be cool! Just don't build it next to my house!
Ahhaha nah i wouldnt want some pet zombies around! It is good to see in a movie though 🤣
yes.. bring on the dodo, but please do keep the dinosaurs.. well, at least the meat eaters. 😉👊
