Odds and Ends — 30 March 2025

Our dog Lucy doesn’t like thunder. Her Happy Hoodie does help at least a bit with her thunder anxiety but perhaps at the cost of making her look a little more psycho than she really is.

Le Pen’s Presidential Hopes Could Die Next Week
Monday could go down as one of the most important days in the history of the French far right.
It’s the moment judges could crush Marine Le Pen’s dream of winning the presidency, one she has never been closer to realizing, according to opinion polls. Le Pen is on trial for having participated in a scheme to embezzle funds from the European Parliament, and if found guilty could be barred from running for any public office for the next five years. The next presidential election is set for 2027.

Everything is on the table to obtain Greenland
The president on Saturday also said he has “absolutely” had real conversations about annexing Greenland, which is currently a semiautonomous Danish territory.
“We’ll get Greenland. Yeah, 100%,” Trump said.
He added that there’s a “good possibility that we could do it without military force” but that “I don’t take anything off the table.” …
Asked what message acquiring Greenland would send to Russia and the rest of the world, Trump said, “I don’t really think about that. I don’t really care. Greenland’s a very separate subject, very different. It’s international peace. It’s international security and strength.”

The Imperialism Has no Clothes
The base at Pituffik (formerly Thule) only exists because Denmark permitted the United States to build it at a sensitive time. It has served the United States for decades as a central part of its nuclear armory and then as an early-warning system against Soviet and then Russian nuclear attack.
When Vance says that Denmark is not protecting Greenland and the base, he is wishing away generations of cooperation, as well as the NATO alliance itself. Denmark was a founding member of NATO, and it is already American’s job to defend Denmark and Greenland, just as it is Denmark’s job (as with other members) to defend the United States.
Americans might chuckle at that idea, but such arrogance is unwarranted. We are the only ones ever to have invoked Article 5, the mutual defense obligation of the NATO treaty, after 9/11; and our European allies did respond. Per capita more Danish soldiers were killed in the Afghan war than were American soldiers. Do we remember them? Thank them?

The Signal chat exposes the administration’s incompetence – and its pecking order
The transcript exposed the internal pecking order of the Trump administration and its actual chain of command, if it could be called anything that regular. In the end, the final decision-maker within the group to whom the others deferred was not any cabinet secretary or the chief of staff.
They turned to ‘SM’ – Stephen Miller – the deputy chief of staff who is Trump’s zealous enforcer. The chief of staff, Susie Wiles, came across as a cheerleader. Miller was the one who gave the stamp of approval. He conveyed Trump’s word. For all intents and purposes, Stephen Miller acted as the de facto president.

Great to see Bernie out and about.
Specifically, the poll found that four in 10 Americans have at least thought about leaving the country within the next few years. And among Gen Z and millennials, almost one in five respondents reported “seriously considering” an imminent move.
Why?
Cost of living is first reason given. "Dissatisfaction with the current political leadership ranked as the second highest concern."
Trump wants to reshape the country. He may be doing that faster than he thinks, and in ways he doesn't anticipate.
****Thank you for Lucy!!! A great reason to smile.
