In a letter to the National Governors Association on Monday, Newsom urged all governors “to denounce this infringement of state sovereignty and unequivocally tell the federal government that it is unacceptable to deploy troops from one state to another, over the objections of the Governor where troops are being sent.” He wrote that if members of the group can’t unite to condemn Trump’s actions, he will withdraw California’s membership from the group.

With the government shut down for a sixth day, President Trump on Monday briefly dangled the possibility of a negotiation with Democrats, only to pull back several hours later — insisting that Democrats must end the standoff first before he would be willing to make a deal on health care.

Such a drama queen. Republicans can end this charade any time they want if they vote to nuke the Senate filibuster. All they have to do is put on their big boy pants.

Budget Office Deletes Reference to Back Pay

The Office of Management and Budget on Friday quietly revised a shutdown guidance document to remove references to a law passed in 2019 to guarantee that all federal workers are provided backpay at the conclusion of a lapse in appropriations.

Trump May Invoke Insurrection Act

…Donald Trump on Monday said he would consider using the Insurrection Act to deploy the military if federal courts prevented him from deploying the National Guard to protect federal buildings and conduct law enforcement operations.
The comments came a day after a federal judge blocked the president from sending National Guard troops to Portland, Oregon, which Trump claims has been taken over by left-wing ‘domestic terrorists.’

Judge Poised to Free Abrego Garcia

A federal judge said on Monday that she was inclined to release Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia, the Maryland man now being held in U.S. immigration custody after wrongfully being removed to El Salvador, if the federal government cannot quickly produce evidence it has plans to deport him soon.
She questioned whether the government was using a ‘trick bag’ to detain him indefinitely by claiming he needed to remain in immigration custody because of an imminent deportation when in fact it had not solidified any such plans.
