News from Europe (or better EU)

The European Commission is evaluating the possibility of legislating a ban on new contracts for Russian fossil fuels, including natural gas, as part of its ongoing efforts to reduce dependency on Russian energy sources. A senior EU official indicated that this move aims to enhance the bloc's energy security in light of geopolitical tensions, according to Reuters

This potential policy shift aligns with the European Union's broader strategy to diversify its energy portfolio and mitigate risks associated with over-reliance on a single supplier. The consideration comes amid heightened awareness of the geopolitical implications of energy dependencies, particularly in the context of recent global events.

The proposed ban would not affect existing contracts but would prevent the initiation of new agreements for Russian fossil fuels. This measure is part of a series of actions the EU is contemplating to strengthen its energy resilience and reduce vulnerabilities.

The discussion around this potential legislation reflects the EU's commitment to a more secure and sustainable energy future, emphasizing the importance of strategic autonomy in critical sectors.

A pretty logical move when comsidering the current political and energy situation as the United States pushes for a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia. The question of whether European Union members should resume large-scale imports of seemingly cheaper Russian gas is already being discussed by some leaders, in both the public and private sectors. A return to Russian gas risks fracturing consensus among capitals according to Bruegel.

Any thoughts? Does that make sense for EU or World or Peace?
