I'm generally not in favour of tariffs, because (although I appreciate it's idealistic !) I believe that if nations trade with each other on a mutually fair and beneficial basis, it increases the impact of going to war with each other and thus helps the cause of world peace.

But I can see the logic of why Trump is doing this. Where I think he is misguided is that while the US is large enough to be self-sufficient in food and many resources, most of the manufacturing was outsourced (mainly to China) since 1991. Trump shouldn't be putting tariffs on the raw resources needed to reconstitute US industry. If he has to do it, he should be applying tariffs to finished goods.
