Even if they pay a price, they're too stupid to know not to do it anyway. !BBH
Comfortable slaves never rebel.™
I do. It's just my nature to call BS when my BS detector detects it, even when it's in my favor. I am an awful peer, but by far a worse slave.
I just don't like taking orders when I am supposed to be free.
I really wish that were true, because stupid people can be replaced with smarter people. The problem we have is that it is evil, Machiavellian LIARS that have attained to positions of political power, each mutually vouchsafing the scams of the others, and the public are bamboozled and baffled by the duplicity deliberately foisted on them by profiteering psychopaths. These people are hard to dislodge and replace with good people. Sowell's proposal for a solution that makes public servants liable for their fallibility creates risk for good people, that really can't be expected to be infallible, and are willing - like Daniel Penny - to risk doing the right thing to protect the public.
While he eventually emerged from the many months of abuse by raging Leftists and bullies, that all police, guards, and court personnel are being declared not guilty of any criminal charges, the horrible abuse he suffered for doing what is right so impressed the public that when a woman was lit on fire no one did a thing to help her before she collapsed and died. This is the price, even just the beginning of the price, we the people pay for venal, pathological political 'servants'. Were there a cost to pressing such charges against Penny, for abusing him in courtrooms, jails, and the press, remotely comparable to the harm that abuse has done him AND THE PEOPLE alarmed by that suffering, then perhaps that bullshit would never have been attempted in the first place by the evil bastards that did it.
But, there is no price, and cops and bureaucrats are specifically indemnified for the wrongs they do good people instead. IMHO we'd be better off with vigilantes than Machiavellian psychopaths so indemnified. Even stupid but well meaning vigilantes would likely do less harm than what we now get served.

Thomas Sowell is very practically minded. This is probably why he is so highly regarded as an economist. It is like gazing into an intergalactic void to look for reasonable disagreements with him on this issue.
Thanks!
