I appreciate the meme, being heavily involved locally in politics, I see a dearth of civic participation. We have little in the way of local journalism, to the point I started attending meetings and events and have been doing some local reporting myself.
My fear is that people won't do the small things at the local level and by inaction or apathy allow their own sovereignty to be diluted.

Grumpy is one of the few privileges of being old.
I thought I would be grumpier at this age, I think early retirement helped with that and gardening. I'll reassess when I get my senior discount at McDonalds. The irony as I've gotten older is I've stopped eating at McDonalds, that may be the thing to be grumpy about :)
