Your line about being a rational conservative reminded me of a story with Goldwater. He was always pro-choice, arguing that controlling what women do is not conservative and is no business of the government. When he was Mr Conservative and on top of the party, it was all good, but as soon as the next generation took over and pushed the party rightward, he found himself out of step with things. There is a story that at one point towards the end of his career he was sitting with Pat Buchanan and remarked on this party movement, saying "Looks like we are now liberals!"

But anyway, yeah, I'm with you. These people just want attention and are doing more harm for their movement than good. I saw that in Indiana there was a MAGA who showed up to a protest and seemed to just be looking for a reason to draw his gun and start a fight. These extremists on both sides are just nuts.

The are conservatives that go to lefty rallies and are just waiting for one of them to take a swing and then they KO the agitator. One guy is a conservative MMA fighter and at first I thought "good for you" but then when I found out that he is going to these things to specifically make this happen I was pissed. I would imagine that he had to stop eventually or got arrested because you can't really continue to claim self-defense when you have a page dedicated to how you trick people into swinging at you and then kick their butts.

Political opinion wasn't something that got you hurt back when I was in college. I would have found out if it did because I was a staunch W supporter and in college. College students hated that guy.
