Forget the past keh?

Although it is often said that we should always let the past stay in the past, I like how the world holds on to the past in people’s lives and thoughts, and I am not an exception. I know of some Nigerian music artists that even if they were to come to my city to perform for free of charge, I would still be scared and skeptical about attending such shows except security is very tight. Oh yeah I'm talking about life here. A typical example of this is Naira Marley and his crew. During the death of one of the crew members, they said a lot of unfearful things concerning the death of the guy, both on their social media posts and the songs they released during that moment when it was trending very thickly that they killed the guy. I love how Naira Marley is being dragged till this day anytime he speaks publicly both on social media posts and elsewhere.

Should we do away with the past?

I don’t know how others see it, but I strongly believe that a person’s life is defined by their past. Forget the religious talks of “forgive the past”; the past has a lot to say in one’s life.

There was a recent trend that revealed a lot of truth in the Nigerian political sector. The newly appointed head official of the body to oversee the upcoming general election was traced back to his past posts on X and was found to have once been a very loyal supporter of the sitting president, which is not supposed to be so because such officials are meant to be non-partisan. The post that was dug up became a public revelation, suggesting that the official was appointed just to manipulate the results in favor of his boss at the end of the day. But, considering how corrupt the political system in Nigeria is, there has been a cover-up through denial by the President and the electoral body at large. You see why it is important to examine someone’s past life too?

I had a friend, maybe we are still friends till this day I don't know😅, who boasted several times that she can't get married with someone she hasn't mingled with for at least a year. She made these boats from the ideas on the books she read and seminars she attended. She's the churchy type and such ideas and beliefs are always with people like that.

Guess what? She married a guy she met for just 5months. Yeah, I was in school when I was given an invitation letter and I never expected the sudden invitation. I waited until everything had settled down before reminding her of the beliefs she had strongly held and spoken about several times. She did not stand by those beliefs. I spoke to her in a way that my words really got to her, even though she tried to brush off the conversation with laughter and jokes.

Thanks for reading

Great post! It’s a complex topic. I agree that the past acts like a compass—it shows us patterns, whether in politics or personal character. It’s hard to 'forget' when the past is the evidence we use to navigate the present. Thanks for sharing these reflections, especially the story about your friend—it’s a perfect example of how life often surprises us

Wow, I love this. You nailed it.

The past is definitely worth considering, because when you hold a certain belief in the past and held on to it like..mand today you're doing the direct opposite.
And for the example you shared, it's a great fit. See Reno Omokri too.
It is well though.

Thanks for sharing.
