Kicking the Tires on Rumble - Thoughts about echo chambers
Maybe it’s a dead end, but I’m giving it a shot anyway. Today I signed up for a Rumble account. No clue what I’m doing with it yet—feels like I’m just squatting on my username before someone else grabs it. Smart move? Who knows.
Still, making that account’s got my brain working overtime for a Monday. I’m not aiming to be an influencer—per se, that’s not me—but Rumble’s giving me pause. It’s got this vibe like it’s just a megaphone for right-wing ideas. Could be wrong, sure, but that’s what my gut is telling me at the moment.
From what I can tell, Rumble started as a pushback to YouTube’s censorship—nobody’s arguing that. But the influencers piling in? Seems like a right-wing convention. Tim Pool and Steven Crowder even posted on X about ditching YouTube for good, taking their streams to Rumble full-time. Bet they’re getting a nice bonus for it—extra cash, extra perks, whatever you wanna call that slice of cake. Point is, Rumble’s handing out those goodies mostly to one side of the political fence. That could shift, yeah, but the louder the echo chamber gets, the tougher it is to balance out. Audience capture’s creeping in, and fast.
Here’s the Problem
Living off one-sided chatter screws with your head—and your grip on reality. Biases are real, and they stack up quick if you don’t keep them in check. Rumble’s not the only culprit—any platform can turn into a bubble if you let it, and we have countless examples out there of this very thing.
You’ve seen it happen too: regular people getting radicalized online. They find their crew, binge on videos that match what they already think, and over time, it’s like those ideas start fermenting—turning sour, sharp and then extreme. Studies back this up—people don’t just stay comfy in their tribes; they double down until they’re unrecognizable.
I’ll keep it short since it’s Monday and nobody’s got time for a novel. Echo chambers never end well—full stop. I’d love to be proven wrong, though.
All that said, if you are on Rumble: let me know. Maybe there's a few of us more centered individuals in there already.
