The idea of Hive: Loyalty and purity tests

avatar

I'm arguing with myself if I should even comment on this, truthfully because there might be no upside to my two cents, but alas, I can't help but to opine.

Screenshot 2025-01-04 080201.png

I remember...

Since I've been here for a long time, you could say I lived the most prosperous time on this blockchain (so far) and it's worse. I was here when making thousands of dollars for post was a thing, when thinking that quitting a day job to blog was not as stupid as it sounds right now.

But, like all good things, that came to an abrupt end, and quite quickly too.

As the price of Hive (then Steem) plummeted, the people started pointing fingers at each other, fighting and lastly leaving.

Exodus

As more users went dormant, more and more projects began shutting down operations. We would see new ideas come up, new proposals be put forth (before DHF, I should say), but nothing was quite working to grow the userbase at all.

Witnessing those power downs, those dumps, as we call them, irritated most of us, including myself. It was almost as if the valuation of this blockchain was being attacked by people who out of spite (so I thought) would sell at any green candle that dared to show it's face.

I became bitter, began resenting users who dumped into the market all their stake, more so when they would show up asking for support, once their stack had dried out.

But, I was wrong

We have no way of knowing what is going on in people's life, and thus making any sort of judgment regarding their financial decisions is all for all intents and purposes unfair.

I particularly remember a lady, I won't tag her out of respect for her memory (she passed a few years back), who lived off her blogging an as you might imagine, would constantly sell everything she made. She was living in Thailand, making ends meet the best way she could, but struggling to do so. She, like many other in her position, was attacked a few times by people who believed people like her (dumpers and beggars) were the reason why the token had dropped in valuation as much as it had.

Embarrassingly, I bought into the idea that weak hands were the problem, and probably echoed those sentiments in one way or another. I don't think I ever "attacked" someone directly, but there are plenty of blog entries of me voicing my frustrations.

Nothing worked

We cant sit here and say with a straight face that the people defending this tokens valuation helped in any significant way. The same way that I can't truly say that a project like Hivewatchers or Spamminators are a net positive for our ecosystem.

Why would I say this? Well, because I'm being objective. We can observe the results of these efforts. These attempts to keep the blockchain pure, to demand loyalty from it's users, have not yielded results.

Frustrated people have left, that's fair, that's fine. They saw a hill not worth climbing and I can respect that. But, we also saw prominent figures, people who contributed to the ecosystem in a big way, leave.

Or should I say; made to leave.

Not pure enough

There are too many examples of people who once proudly called themselves Steemians/Hiveans. People who would attends the Fests every year, who would preach to anyone that would listen about how wonderful this blockchain can be, that found themselves pushed out for "fucking up".

They either tried to navigate the difficult drama with Tron and "picked the wrong side" like Exyle, or had the audacity of working on other projects outside this ecosystem like Luke Stokes.

My point is that the white blood cells among us have correctly or incorrectly (my position) Identified too many foreign objects among us that must be expelled from the ecosystem. And, through this immune system type behavior left our chain barren of life, a couple of times.

When we entered ICU

The tensions with our feudal lord Ned, the later sell to Tron, should have been the thing that killed us, but as you can see we are still here.

I'm of the idea that the only reason why the ecosystem survived is because it was attacked so aggressively by Justin Sun. For a minute there, we forgot about shitting on each other, policing people for dumping their tokens into the market, for spamming, etc.

Everyone knew that if they didn't come together, the story would come to an end. Funnily enough; some of the key players that allowed Hive to successfully launch, to survive such a terrible fate, are no longer here. They too became impure and had to be weeded out. (I do hope people get this sarcasm).

But, have we learnt anything?

Sadly, yes and no. There are some people these days on here who know better than to get involved with the drama. The politics on Hive are as complex as ever, and as such they are not meant for everyone.

The smarter people on here, dedicate themselves to building their stake or a project and participate as little as possible of the fights that still happen on the chain.

That being said, it's close to impossible to not get involved in the politics of this chain when you are building on here, and we even saw the most successful project on here ever, Splinterlands, almost leave the chain, with what would have been the most bitter of situations.

Why? Why all this shit?

I wish I knew exactly how to explain it in a way that would make people reconsider their approach to life on the blockchain. In my opinion the purity tests are a detriment to us, but I also know that my opinion is probably in the minority.

We are, after all, humans. People who are full of insecurities (because we all are). People who wonder if they 8 years they've invested on here, writing, interacting with others, opining on issues, will be worth anything at all.

Feeling fear is normal, quite normal. I too feel at times there's a good chance I fucked up long ago and I'm yet to find out. But, I keep on jolting myself back into reality to carry about my day.

Even if this experiment of ours ended tomorrow. If the efforts to keep it clean, keep it pure; NO AI, NO SPAM, NO IMAGES WITHOUT SOURCES, NO COMMIE OPINIONS, NO WHATERVER. Even if those kill the blockchain. I, we, us, we already won.

I try to remind myself how much I've learnt by being here, how much I've learnt by writing on this blog of mine for so many years so many posts. I will never go as far as to say I'm a writer of any kind, but I'm quite comfortable communicating this way and it's all thanks to our collective experience.

But, is there hope?

Do I think we have a chance? Of course I do. But not because we are going to up the purity tests, the loyalty tests, no.

If we make it, it will be despite of them. These human elements have become part of the ecosystem by now. A reflection of the aspects of our mind we all have, that we all need to navigate successfully.

As far as I'm concerned, I won't bother attempting to castigate someone who is developing a tool I don't like, or someone who is "dumping" their tokens or someone who is upvoting his own comments (sacrilege, I know).

In this aspect I think Dan had the right idea. It's impossible to win the fight against negative behavior. Impossible to have a clean blockchain without spam or bots. What is possible, or what should be our aim, is to build tools on this ecosystem that thrive despite all the impurities it has.

Twitter, now X, is today's most important and successful social media platform in the world. And this is not the case because they successfully got rid of all of the abuse, the bots and the "impure" users who are not loyal to twitter.

At any rate

I'm already too many pages in, and it feels like I could go on for many more, but I'll kill it here.

Maybe I'll share more some other day, or maybe I'll just post more guitar stuff.

I've seen all the drama too and I try to avoid getting dragged in. The are some big egos here who often clash and others gets caught in the crossfire. I just saw another fight broke out this week and it did involve a person selling what they earned. The fact is that people have to pay the bills and Hive may contribute to thatheirt. Not everyone can afford to stake it all. In places like Venezuela and Cuba it makes a real difference.

We ought to be free to do what we want on Hive and others can choose to support us or not. Of course we have to deal with generic abuse, but just disagreeing with someone is not a reason to drive them out. I have sometimes worried that the place would be taken over by extremists, but that has yet to happen.

I've met lots of Hivers in person. I might totally disagree with the politics of some, but we managed to get along. We've lost too many good people over various disagreements and we can't afford that.

Despite all the drama we have lots of active projects. People will think that some of them have little value, but the community has some say in how they do.

Hive is still tiny really, so we're like small fish fighting over a pond whilst the rest of the world swims in oceans. Growth will bring challenges and we have to face those as they come up.

Hive Emergency: A Call to Action STOP THE BAD DOWNVOTES

We are facing a critical situation on the Hive blockchain, where a small group of individuals is exerting undue influence and control over the community. This group, comprised of a single "whale" and their associated accounts, is using their power to downvote good content, self-vote their own posts, and power down their tokens.

This behavior is having a devastating impact on our community, and it is essential that we take immediate action to address this issue. We propose two key solutions:

  • Implement a comment requirement for downvotes: This would ensure that users are aware of the reasons behind downvotes and can engage in informed discussions about the motivations behind these actions.
  • Reform our community to prioritize love and inclusivity: We must create a community where everyone can thrive, not just the chosen few. This can be achieved by promoting a culture of love, compassion, and respect.

We understand that some individuals may be concerned about the rules and moderators. However, it is essential to recognize that the rules are made by the same individuals who are farming the system. Therefore, it is time for us to take matters into our own hands and create a new, better Hive.

We invite you to share your thoughts, ideas, and concerns in the comments below. Together, we can work towards creating a more inclusive, compassionate community for all Hivers.

Your decision to keep your actions under wraps is a clear sign of your desperation, and it's not going to work. You thought you could keep your scamming activities hidden, but the truth has finally come to light. It's time for you to face the consequences of your actions and seek help. Being online will not solve your problems; in fact, it will only exacerbate them. Those who encourage your behavior are just as culpable as you are, and it's essential that they take responsibility for their actions as well.

We've even caught some top Hivers using their alt accounts to fund their own projects and manipulate the system. It is like they are playing a game of Hiveopoly, but instead of rolling dice, they are rolling out downvotes and taking money as they wish

Getting along with people who you disagree with you is a life hack. Most people these days think that unless someone you know mirrors your ideology, there is absolutely no reason to be kind or friendly to that person. More so online.

But, we come from a different generation my friend... Idk if this trend is reversible

This post resonated with me.
I too have engaged in the mental judgements of what keeps hive from thriving.
I’ve thought it must be all the users who never invest and post and sell.
It must be the downvote armies that chase people away.
It must be the dramas that break out.
It must the promotion failures and mismanagement of value plan.
It’s the whales circle jerking…etc etc.
Truth is it’s probably a bit of each of those things.
Though I’ve come to see that small time posters that immediately cash out are not very significant to price decrease. Just a handful of whales or top witnesses cashing out dwarf the drain of small users.
At the end of the day, humans tend to be fickle. We will generally choose the selfish choice.
I’m now at a place where I know why I’m here… and beyond that I feel a small fish who is best off just doing my style posting thing and continuing to connect with people I appreciate around Hive.
There is much I don’t fully agree with, but I can say similar things about existing in this world.
And so it goes….

You just reminded me of the one time I witnessed Freedom cashing out.... It was in the STEEM days, but FREEDOM began dumping in chunks of 5k for hours. As the buy walls disappeared, and the token plummeted to garbage valuation, I thought to myself:

I understand why Satoshi went away....

It would take 1 person, one whale, to crash this whole thing. They probably won't, because they would lose too. But, to compare the power us the plebs have, with theirs, is a joke.

I try to remind myself how much I've learnt by being here, how much I've learnt by writing on this blog of mine

I am a woman of many seasons (more than most here) and I'm still learning.

I never enjoyed policing my children. I never enjoyed policing my students (when I was a teacher). I never enjoyed being an enforcer, when that was my job. Rules are important, but agreeing on the important ones--ah, that's the rub. And then, who will enforce them?

I hope not to cross anyone with a tender ego. That's true here and when I'm out on the road, driving.

Maybe Hive's not perfect. I don't understand the technology at all. But I do understand the ecosystem is important, really important to some people who have little access to cash. Even if I wasn't learning. Even if I wasn't hoping my stake would be worth something to my kids someday, I'd support Hive because people need it.

I really enjoy your frank way of writing. I've read few of your blogs since yesterday, and they are interesting, especially the one about Adrien Dittman 😄.

oh the drama :D

people sell everything for various reasons, do i judge them? not really. do i often check? not really. But when i notice an account that is 5-7 years old, active and has no stake, it kinda feels selfish. The same as upvoting your own comments. So maybe i just don't want to have anything with them.

I like the idea of distributing Hive and while doing it earning. And i am lucky enough to not need to sell.

i have e feeling (could be wrong) Exyle would not have any particular problems if he staid on the chain. He kinda took the "i think both are wrong stand", took some shit from people that had strong feelings on Justin takeover.

not sure about Luke Stokes drama. maybe i missed it. i have a feeling he is just not that active, but i never seen him saying anything bad about the chain, and it feels like he is just not that active.

it will never be a pure chain, it is not possible, but there is nothing wrong it trying. We would agree that fighting the payed bot upvote service was a positive thing?

AI content is something new to everyone and the thoughts are evolving. I still have the take that using it is not a bad thing. Just be strait about it, and don't expect people throwing upvotes at you for AI automated posts.

Overall as someone who likes to test out all the new things made here, i would like to see more cooperation and less drama.

After Exyle got treated like garbage, I doubt he felt a desire to be here. I mean, his own tribe cast him out. Even if they said, hey.. come back, don't powerdown, it would be too much to ask of someone with a broken heart.

Luke was because he became a project lead on another blockchain (or something like that). I wanna say he got heavily involved with EOS, but it's been years so I can't remember. He got attacked for it, questioned for his commitment to the chain and thus began losing his place in the witness rankings, and then in the community.

I'm glad you brought up the AI content, because this post was inspired due to that "new drama".

You can have a personal position about something, and still think accept that some things are inevitable, and thus should probably be embraced.

I hate AI art, it pisses me off. You have no idea how it grinds my gears that there are people today who are calling themselves songwriters because they can prompt songs on an AI.

That being said, the cat is not going back in the bag. And this blockchain will have a ton of AI bots and apps running on it, or it will simply stay behind and perish.

The little bot in question, although not my cup of tea, was not in any way shape or form "destroy" the valuation of this chain.

Imagine a beach, full of sand, and a 5 year old kid with a toy shovel and a bucket carrying sand off to his dads truck, because he wants to have a sandbox in his house. Now imagine us witnessing this and thinking this kid is going to make the beaches of Florida disappear.

Now, if this little kid of my hypothetical hired a thousand people to help him loud trucks of sand, then the story would be different (giant spam farms). But that never happened.

Every single time the "immune system" here reacts like this, every single time it pushes out who they deem to be not pure enough, we lose too. I say this as someone who's seen it countless times. I've seen big names being driven off the chain for selling their stake (David Pakman comes to mind).

But hey... this is the price of freedom, people are free to fuck up.

after 3 days of worst stomach virus, trying to keep up :D

i get the Exyle point. For Luke maybe i messed a lot, i see him posting from time here to time and commenting on X.

There is no running away from AI. My personal take on it is just don't try to lie about it. Do we want just AI prompts articles on the chain? I would assume not.

From what i seen, and i must admit i am not deep into the politics, it is not just about the bot (and i know that was the point of your post), but to be honest in the current form, that bot just feels like spam.

I still didn't try it, but the AI youtube video summarizer sounds like something i would use and something that makes sense.

I mean i get your point, and i would say you are mostly right. But the way system works, if you sell everything you get, in the end most will stop supporting.
