Foreign interference in Moldovan elections? Founder of Telegram, Pavel Durov, claims an EU member state pressured him to censor channels associated with Moldovan elections, while Moldova is not part of the EU.

On Sunday, parliamentary elections were held in the Republic of Moldova, in which the pro-European (pro-EU) ruling party PAS narrowly achieved an absolute majority (50.2%).

Moldova is a small but politically important country for the EU and Russia, as it is located between Ukraine and Romania and a pro-Russian part (Transnistria) has seceded since the 1990s.

While the EU accuses Russia of foreign influence and financing of opposition parties in Moldova, shortly before the election, the founder of Telegram also spoke out, claiming that there was pressure from an EU member state before the elections to censor Telegram channels related to the Moldovan elections. According to Pavel Durov, the deletion requests were unjustified in most cases.

One week and two days before the election, two pro-Russian opposition parties (Greater Moldova and Heart of Moldova) were excluded from the elections. This was so close to the election that they were unable to challenge the decision.

Further allegations concern Moldova making it difficult for separatists to participate in the elections by closing a bridge, and that it was easier for Moldovans who had emigrated to the EU to participate in the elections than for the hundreds of thousands of Moldovans who live or work in Russia.

These allegations are difficult to verify. The fact is, however, that voter turnout was a worryingly low 52%, despite the geopolitical significance of the election.

However, none of this is truly representative, nor is it a reason for the EU to celebrate the result.

What do you think about the elections in Moldova? Do you think the result is truly democratic and representative given this background? Why were two opposition parties excluded so shortly before the elections?

Maybe the only way to beat Russia is to use their gameplan against themselves. Russia interfere in a lot of elections, sabotage etc.

We are seeing the new iron curtain forming, and I am looking forward to never have to so with Russia again. They can live in the shithole and praise Putin as their supreme leader.

EU always try to manipulate elections as soon as result is not in their favor, like in Romania, and soon to be in France or Germany when afd or fn is going to win

I was very uneasy about the bridge situation throughout the day. Sounded too much like foul-play.

Was it truly the democratic result of the election? I don't honestly know. After what happened with our own elections in Romania in December and then May, I'm doubtful. On the other hand, I do sympathize greatly with Moldova's precarious position (lacking so much EU and NATO protection, if protection it be). I understand why they might go this way.

However, none of this is truly representative, nor is it a reason for the EU to celebrate the result.

💯

Precisely my thought. From all this intense focus on Moldova, it does seem to me to be a battleground of some sort for other forces. And frankly, that never ends well, particularly for a country so poor and exposed as Moldova.

I don't think they should have excluded 2 parties, and I don't think the results are that credible. Especially if they have to remove telegram channels.
