VSC Node Operators Soft Launch - Early Access Application

Call to Action: Become a VSC Node Operator!

image.png

As the VSC Network Mainnet soft launch is just days away, we are happy to announce early access applications for anyone who wants to become a node operator. This application form will ensure a fast and open line of communication between our development team and the first VSC Mainnet node operators. This will be key during the first stages and will definitely make the VSC network stabilize faster as we will be able to easily communicate issues uncovered and resolve them quickly. Node operators will help secure the network and execute the smart contracts, so it's very important that we get as many as possible online. More nodes equal more security and decentralization, so if you have any technical knowledge, we encourage you to come on board. We will be available to help with any issues you may experience bringing your node online.

At this time, we have already gotten commitments from some users to set up their nodes right away. The ultimate goal is to get as many nodes online as possible to ensure the security and decentralization of the network. These nodes will be the backbone for all functionality as well, such as smart contract execution and Consensus. On top of helping the network execute transactions, the network will begin accumulating fees in a treasury account, which will start to be paid out to node operators this Summer.. The minimum amount of HIVE stake required to apply to be an early node operator is 2,000 liquid HIVE, which will be locked to your node on VSC.

Early node operators are a crucial part of the mainnet and will be building blocks(literally) for the future of VSC. Some of you may have been operating a node for our testnet, which we greatly appreciate, as it has allowed us to solidify and refine our codebase. It should be an easy transition for you as you already have experience with our software and how to configure everything. If you already know what a VSC node operator is and are ready to set yours up, you can skip the following Q&A section and enter the application form. If not, please take a minute to read our common questions about what a VSC node operator is and the requirements to become one.

Questions & Answers

Why would I want to run a node?

Node operators support VSC node security and earn fees from the network (coming late summer). There is also an incentive in the form of a future VSC token airdrop.

What's in it for the node runner?

Node operators will earn fees from the network in exchange for their contributions.

What does running a node require? (tech knowledge, hardware, etc)

A basic understanding and experience with Command-Line Interface (CLI) is required, along with:

  • A minimum of 8 GB of RAM
  • 80 GB of storage space
  • Minimal server hardware (raspberry pi or deskmini equivalent)
  • A public IP address (static is preferred)

What does the node do for the network?

Nodes help secure the VSC network and execute smart contracts. Nodes are the backbone for all functionalities, stability, and Consensus Participation.

Time to Apply!

Now that you have learned about the requirements and how your node will help support VSC, it’s time to fill out that application! It’s short and sweet, so don’t hesitate to get yours submitted as soon as possible. We sincerely appreciate any applications for early node operators and look forward to a monumental moment, the mainnet launch. We would not be here without the support of the Hive community, so this is your chance to get something back from the network for all of your support. Strap in and prepare for launch!

Applied just now under my “Botlord” account ;-) Intend to run it for at least a year (and longer), and want to look into developing on VSC as well!

Oh, I need at least 2000 HIVE staked? ...That'd be... difficult.

It needs to be liquid (as far as I understand) and then it will be locked to your node, which might be equivalent to staking... at least that's what I understood from the description 😆

Oh no! @caspermoeller89, you are out of DUO!
Go acquire more Stake to increase your DUO standings.

Will the earnings from this cover the costs if I ran it on a VPS? If I know for sure that I'll recover at least 70% of the costs, (using the minimum requirements,) I'll set up a VPS server as soon as possible! @vsc.network

Liquid HIVE? So to be clear we cannot delegate the HIve? I need to come up with 2000 liquid hive?

And what is the lock up procedure?

It needs to be locked within VSC. The lockup structure is pretty simple for this initial version. You can stake immediately, then unstake takes a minimum of 24h to a maximum of 30h to return the requested amount

When will we have to process for locking up the liquid Hive within VSC? I am ready to get started ;)

Node operation is open. We will be starting up block production sometime today ideally, then you should be able to start locking up Hive once I've confirmed everything is working as intended

I have registered with @eco.lightnode !

I think "hive username" might could say "hive username with which you plan to host the node" -

Keep it up, we got your back!

One P2P port!

Ok, missed that one out most likely in the old code too.

Will try to prepare everything today.

The hardware part is the most costly for me
I can manage to find the 2k Hive
If it is possible to create a pool for users to participate.
I hope many will eventually contribute to the effort to grow this project
Peace

There will be other ways to obtain the airdrop. However, we are not focused on launching a token just yet

I'd like to enter with my alter account
And also I have question what to do if I haven't 2000liquid hive? Why such ammount should be blocked?

It's required to run a witness node. We may consider adjusting the minimum in the future

Adjusting it will allow for more "spammy" applications, but will also open up for enthusiastic users who haven't got a big chunk (myself included) 😁

This has nothing to do with applications. It is strictly a requirement for running a witness node and participating in consensus. Smart contracts are very cheap to use.

My bad, think I had it mixed up in my head. Should probably sleep and then read it all again 😝

But why you announce this mandatory thing just several days before launch?
Also if I run testnet node, after launch it turns out that I can't run mainnet node in such case?
Will be testnet node available for further running till achieving some milestone?
What are your plans for VSC testnet after launching VSC mainnet?

Testnet has already been deactivated from the L1. It is still running on the L2, but node runners will quickly switch over the mainnet. The testnet will be fully deactivated

That being said, we will be setting up another more specialized testnet later on for testing protocol upgrades, but for now we aren't doing that.

Ok it's clear now with L1 and L2
But if I'm running node now on the L2 after official launch can I run it further without 2000 hive or not?
Or I need to wait till this amount will be reduced?
Also if I decide to stop running node how quickly locked hive ammount will be unlocked?

Running a witness on mainnet requires 2000 Hive minimum to participate in consensus. When you unstake, it takes a minimum of 24h to unlock back to liquid Hive.

Do you have any information on possible returns from the staked investment? I.e. What's in it for the node operators? Other than helping run the system, obviously.

OK, yes, but no way to calculate risk/reward regarding the staking at this point then.

Not yet. There is no network revenue yet until things get started up and start bringing in users. Once that happens and network stabilized out we can start work on building distribution systems for node operation

I see, ok - thanks for clarifying.
