The Economic Burden Of Illiteracy

I remember when I was relocating and then my friend who is a northener came to help me pack. While we packed, time seemed to be far spent and we were barely half way through boxing my belongings so he decided to source for assistance and he went out of my compound to speak to some of the northerners who do menial jobs in the area to come assist and they agreed.

We were almost done packing my room and I climbed a stool to get some of the figurines I had kept up of my wardrobe out of reach from my daughter. My friend rebuked me and asked me to sit back and direct while his Northern brothers do all the packing.

So I sat and as I instructed them on where to look, I saw one of them reach out for the figurines and while he held it looking at it for quite a while, he just dropped it on the floor like a pile of books and everything broke to pieces. My friend who was in the sitting room at the item monitoring the boxing of my electronics ran into the room to ask what had happened.

I was infuriated as I yelled asking him if he's blind to not see that it's ceramics and ought to be handled with care. As I fumed, the boy just kept quiet.

Those figurines were quite expensive and I cherished them alot especially being a gift. After calming me down, my friend spoke to him in their dialect and he explained that he didn't know it would break. I found it difficult to believe but that ladies and gentlemen is the effect of stark illiteracy and the effect of limited education.

You see education is the training of the mind to think not just that but it's also the refinement of character such that an educated individual is an enlightened being who has developed a 6th sense to be able to navigate the stormy sea called life.

In my country there is a huge gap between the North and the South and the culprit is education. Lack of access to quality education is the number one reason why Northerners are worse hit with poverty and willing tools for terrorism.

The gap between Africa and other developed nation is innovative education. When it comes to the educational sector we are greatly lagging behind and the effect is what you see in our underdeveloped state, politics and dealings.

The importance of education being an access to all can never be overemphasized and any nation seeking for peace and prosperity should make education a priority.
